Thumbs up Bend-Pak MD-6XP Mid-Rise Lift

OK...I have been looking for a lift for my garage for quite some time, but I was torn between the different offerings available. i.e. Two Post lift, 4 Post, low rise and mid-rise. I finally decided to get the mid-rise since it seemed to be a good mix of features I wanted.

BEND-PAK MD-6XP

Price Paid: $1410 + $50 Residential drop off fee (free shipping to business)

Positives:
  • Solid Construction (pushing car while fully raised does not result in excessive rocking)
  • Setup in less than 1 hour using easy to follow instructions
  • Raises and Lowers very smoothly
  • Unrestricted access to wheels
  • Decent working height (52")
  • Unrestricted access to engine (see close up photos below)
  • Can be easily moved to a new house if needed
  • Does not require any special concrete foundation reinforcement or lag bolts
  • 120V or 220V available operation by changing the wiring at the motor

Negatives:
  • Access to areas immediately above the lift (middle of the car underbelly) is significantly obstructed. (Can be overcome by lifting the car in stages and using the truck adapters to give 8" or so of clearance...still not enough to drop the fuel tank though...not like I do that every day though!)
  • Only has local manual safety release mechanisim (have to crawl under vehicle to release safety before lowering vehicle...some competitors have remote safety release (looks like bicycle brake) on the handle of the power unit itself)
  • Only has a few locking heights (3 or 4)...some competitors have several 12 or so (not that big of a deal).
  • Has relatively short hydraulic hose (will probably have to extend it for my application)
  • Ramps are needed for lowered cars to pass over lift
  • Would prefer Black color rather than Blue

Here is a gratuitous shot of it in the garage getting used to it's new surroundings!

Is there any issue with upsetting the balance of the car if on the lift if, say, the engine was dropped?

I think that it would be just fine withstanding the weight shift for such a small car (rated capacity is 6,000 pounds or so). I actually have the car offset pretty far to the rear or the lift in the photos (provides best access to engine compartment) and dropping the engine would actually make it more stable...

A controlled drop that is

Brian...Patti just got a 2005 BMW 545i so now we are back to parking one car outside the garage...go figure. What is that saying..."if you build it they will come". Oh well...we hope to sell her old car quickly to keep everything inside.

Damned good thing I can identify the underbelly of an MR2 up there.

Because if there weren't MR2 content, I'd have had to submit this thread to the admins to have it closed.

Are you confident when working on the underside of the MR2? If you go to torque down a bolt does the car move at all? Would you feel safe enough with doing a clutch install working under the car? I'm very close to buying one of these but really need to address my concerns. Thanks

Does the lift damage your plastic underbody covers. It appears in picture 4 and 5 that the mr2 is putting all the weight on those plastic covers. Yikes!

In the photos it's hard to tell, but it does not touch the plastic underbody covers.
