Product Review: sbITs Front Trunk Lid Gas Charged Prop Kit

The very first mod I installed on my silver 1994 Toyota MR2 Turbo was a gas prop for the engine lid ordered from TwosRUs. To date, it is still one of my favorite and most complimented mods. The gas prop for the engine lid is so much better than OEM prop that is on the opposite side of the car, unless you are in Japan/UK/Australia where they drive on the wrong side of the road. I remember thinking when I installed the gas prop for the engine lid several years ago how I wished there was something similar offered for the MR2 to prop the hood. I have some of my audio setup under the hood, and that factory hood prop rod was always right there in the way when I was showing it to other people, or trying to work on the equipment I have in there, or trying to get to the spare tire or battery in my other MR2s. Well now, thanks to a product manufactured by sbITs and sold exclusively in the US by TwosRUs, we have a solution to eliminate the dated and cumbersome OEM hood prop rod on the MK 2 (SW20) Toyota MR2!

I ordered the prop rods for the hood and David Hawkins promptly emailed me to say that the order would not ship right away because they were closed for vacation. That was no big deal to me as I was rather busy anyway. Much to my suprise, I recieved the package what seemed like only a few days later. David ships faster while on vacation than alot of companies do when they are working! I've ordered several products over the years from David, and you can count on prompt, curteous, professional service. It's safe to say David has a perfect customer service track record for many years now.

As always, the product was professionally packaged and complete with all required parts and detailed instructions. The installation was so easy a monkey could do it as evidenced by me completing the install in less than 15 minutes.

Here are some pictures of the install:

The completed install. I didn't take step by step pictures because it's so easy there was no point.

A close-up. Sorry about the flash.

Two other angles.

My favorite part of the install.

A note to those with a carbon fiber hoods. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the kit (mounting bolts) needs to be modified if you have a non-OEM hood. Contact TwosRUs directly to be sure. In closing, I highly recommend this product. It gives the MR2 a more modern look. The parts are so OEM quality that a non-enthusiast wouldn't even know the MR2 didn't come with those. It's definitely more convenient and less hassle than the OEM hood prop and I plan to get them for my other MR2s like I did with the engine lid gas prop.
