Pictures from NASA event at Road America 10/22&23/06

I know this is a little old but I just found google web hosting. This was an eye opening event for sure. Cold and windy high speed technical track with intermittent rain was definetly a great opportunity to find out how firmly your attachments were in place and how good your judgement is. There was more than one car towed away from this event more bent up than it arrived.

yeah

just trying to decide between V710s in 195/205 (versus my 205/225 RA1s) or spending those points on swaybar(s) and a catback or something like that

tough choice

I would think that you've got incredible grip with the r-compounds and that a bit more power would allow you to take better advantage of what you have.

Have you looked to see if you could maybe switch a larger OE sway bar to avoid points?

What do you have for suspension so far?

Koni Yellows and lots of camber

power would be just the catback, probably won't gain much with the NA, more weight reduction than anything

I wasn't aware of any other "factory" swaybars, but I'd get charged for them anyway...

as good as the RA1s are, there are faster tires... if they made a 195 Hoosier I'd have already pulled the trigger on those (since they run wide and are charging points on printed tire size, they'd be physically as wide as RA1s)

just trying to really decide
1.) if the compound difference will outweigh the width difference
2.) if something like a big fat ST bar on the front would help?
3.) if they both would help, which would help more?

I'd love to have this car SCCA E Stock prepared and fit into TTF... but I want to win Time Trials more than I want to have a fully maxed out to a class autocross car... so..

I look forward to hearing what your experience is with it. Hoosiers on an MR2 .. that just sounds crazy for some reason.

What behavior are you trying to control with the front sway?

Im trying to learn more about it, but the ES/BS autocross guys swear by it... supposedly helps control overall roll to the point where inside rear wheelspin tendencies are greatly reduced

a neat side effect is that on throttle at the limit the inside front tire lifts

I was fighting some wheelspin at Mid-Ohio, and seeing as how Nationals are held there... I want the car to work VERY well there

oh any word on those wheels? I need a set by mid-Feb, I might start junkyard searching here soon....

What are you using for springs, OE? I've got RSR Race springs on my car and am so happy with how they manage the weight I have no intentions of doing anything with the sways. I might put a new set of OE bushings in but that's about it.

Having the tire lifting seems like a rather costly side effect considering that could result in some vicious understeer. Not something I'd like to be thinking about in a high speed sweeper.

Sorry about the delay in getting you those pictures. Been having camera issues. I should be able to get 'em for you this week though.

and thats why I'm asking the ES/BS guys about the bar

I should look at how many points springs are tho, good point, esp with the Konis I have

good to hear you're on the pics, I'd rather have a decent set thats been taken care of than a junkyard set that may have hidden accident damage or some crap

I suspect that the springs will be more points than the sways. I am knocking around the idea of putting in the H&R non-adjustable coilovers. Bilstein dampers with the ability to set the spring rate, ride height etc and 1 point less than an adjustable damper/spring combo IIRC. I don't know that the springs they come with are heavy enough to suit my tastes but that's a solvable problem.

Incidentally, they also give a pretty good ride quality street driving too.

I just re-read the rules and the clarification thread

coilovers are +3 for shocks, +2 for springs (same points as if you did say, Koni Yellow inserts + H&Rs or something...)

when someone asked about coilovers in the clarification thread, there was no mention of +1 for changing the spring perch design

even then, if I do get charged +1 for the perches, I've got the points to play with to get coilovers so long as:
1.) they cost less than $2999 (MSRP new)
2.) the shocks are double adjustable (or single)

now I just have to afford them....

It's 5 pts for non-adjustable coilovers, right?

The H&Rs I was talking about can be found for ~$900.

Why would you have to modify the perches?

the 2007 rules are quite a bit different

they seperate out the springs/shocks/perches
+2 for springs
+3 for the shocks (double adjustable or less, and under the price cap)
+1 for changing the OEM shock perches (since they aren't there anymore, nor are they threaded stock... etc)

I asked Greenbaum for clarification, we'll see. at any rate heres where I'd like to be by Nationals mods/points wise:

TTF
+ 7 base penalty
+ 6 for RA1s in 205/225 (+5 compound, + 1 width)
+ 5 or 6 for coilover setup
+ 1 if any points left for catback (straight pipe or maybe supertrapp)
weight reduction to no less than 2653 at any point during competition with driver, gear, etc

total = 19, stay in TTF

w00t, got the clarification

the threaded spring perches are handleded in the free mod section as "ride height"

soooo I'm looking at either a custom 8611 Koni + GC stuff or maybe the KWs in the name of street manners

points look like this:
+ 7 handicap
+ 5 for RA1s
+ 1 for 225s
+ 3 for shocks (DA or SA)
+ 2 for springs
+ 1 for some kind of catback (probably straight pipe or something, lol)
= 19

Awesome! Now don't you be goin' and getting the car reclassed before I get to run time trials.

One question; why a GC set up instead of coilovers?

The Koni8611 is a shorter body than stock, so I'd have to have the stock strut tubes cut down in the middle to fit them. on top of those I'd be throwing on Ground Control sleeves, perches, etc. They'd be custom built coilovers, instead of some off-the-shelf stuff

now I just have to get a resonable price quote on building them... ugh
