Exclamation Road Racing Setup..

Im wondering what people have found to be the best setup for road racing?

What type of Coilovers?
Traction bars / Engine dampers / Engine braces?
Brand strut/sway bars?
Camber Plates?

Theres a guy who im friends with. Hes rich, and cocky. He owns a Blue Evo8 which has around 330wheel horsepower and is completely setup for track. He runs a 1:48 around Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Hes my target.

Yea im intereted in what kind of setups people are running for race purposes. I am in the works of picking out mine.
Right now i am thinking about KW Varient 3 Coil overs....they are ment for race purposes and are fully adjustable. Stainless steal units with teflon adjustment rings...never rust

Get stronger engine mounts to prevent rocking in the engine bay which creates wheel hop at times.
Traction bars i think they are being sold on mr2oc right now for the 3s engines, i am going to be using mr2greasemonkeys units hes making for the V6'ers.

Good thread hopfully people jump in

I'm also curious what ppl are using. I'm wanting to redo my setup, which I've only got HA's right now and was curious if those are acceptable for road race purpurses?

I need to get some of those under transmission-to-subframe mounts.... no clue where to get them though.

Running down an Evo with 330 WHP on a road course is going to be a challenge! I also own an Evo that puts out about that whp (depending on dyno) and my car is fast. I've done laps with a new Ford GT and run down a Lamborghini Gallardo in it. I've done a bit with the engine, and my Evo has also seen work on the suspension and some minor work on the brakes.

If you're serious about running him down then you'll need to be committed. I'm currently also working on an '91 MR2. The things I'm changing are:

1) Replacing all the bushings with a TRD kit (HT would work, too)
2) Upgrading the brakes to 93+ turbo spec (including the master cylinder and proportioning valve)
3) Stainless steel brake lines
4) High performance brake pads - The real stuff - Hawk, Ferodo, Carbotech, etc. My MR2 will start with Carbotech XP-8 combound pads on all 4 corners.
5) Upgrading the rear end to the newer 93+ rear end geometry (to avoid positive toe under hard cornering)
6) Replacing the OE strut set-up with Tokico dampers and RSR Down springs (The MR2 is street biased - for a track set-up I would go with a good set of coilovers - I have Zeal Function XS units on my Evo)
7) Wider wheels and tires with GOOD rubber - the tires are the single most important "performance part" on a track car. I'm going to 17" wheels with 7" fronts and 8" rears. For a hard core track beast I would first try to find some very light 15" or 16" wheells I could get in 8" and 9" widths - figure out your tires sizes first - choose your wheels to fit the tire choices.
8) Track spec alignment (and cornerweighting for cars with coilovers) - I don't have much to back this up with yet, but I'm planning on starting with -2 deg camber up front, -1.5 camber in back and 3.5 deg front caster. I also plan to run 0 toe all around.

That's just to get started. If the car's handling still needs work then you may need to replace one or both sway bars and revisit your alignment specs and tire choice and presures.

Once the car's handling and braking are where they need to be then work on adding power. I do believe that a properly developed MR2 could run with an Evo on the track, but it will take some work to get there. A big point in the MR2's favor is that it weighs alot less then an Evo. As a counterpoint, a well tuned AWD set-up delivers crazy corner exit speeds.

Work on the driver, then the car. Just imo. It's hard to find a driver that can drive their own car to it's potential. Doesn't matter if you have thousands of dollars in your suspension or thousands in your motor if you can't drive it to it's limit.

LOL - yeah, that really is the key.

I would also suggest addressing anything mechanical that could become a point of failure before you even take the car to the track for the first time.
