it's impossible for the hand brake switch to go bad. the worst it can do is not light up the ! light because the circuit is CLOSED when the lever is down.
the problem is the level sensor either...

Call autozone and see if they have a ridge reamer you can rent. This is important to the new rings so they don't break. The old rings caused a ridge to wear in the top of the cylinders, the reamer...

I rebuilt mine using a kit from gpopshop.com and mine still runs strong.
