Cars previously tagged as gross polluters or cars that have a high chance of meeting the gross polluter profile are often asked to have a smog check done once a year. Smog checks are usually around $50.. Now.. if you want to go through the hassle and expense of buying an entirely new car (which will certainly cost you more than $50), then be my guest. It won't be cheaper, though

You can probably find the exact import information that you're looking for by visiting CA's Department of Motor Vehicles website: California Department of Motor Vehicles

What are you talking about? I've had a 93NA with a JDM turbo engine lid, stickers and all, inspecte by the smog referees.. and they didn't give a hoot about it.

They've also looked at my V6-swapped 93NA with 5SFE stickers on it.. and also failed to give a hoot.

Actually, I ended up picking up a 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider. I sat in a Miata and felt very squashed inside. The Alfa is so much better and fun to drive than the Miata.
