hello all. too ****ing tired to read the pages i've missed out on. will catch up later.

update on the 2:
got her running around 10:30 this evening.
2 problems:
-she is idling like she has a vac leak
-sparks fly from the starter when i start her up (i have no idea how long this has been going on, they shoot out during cranking and then once the engine turns over they stop)

i tried chasing the vac leak down with TB cleaner and the idle seemed to stabilize when i sprayed where the pan seals against the block, but it was hard to tell. it could be i didn't seal it properly, the pan is warped, or maybe the leak has nothing to do w/ the pan maybe its the EGR valve or a vac line i missed or that cracked or something.
i had to stop for the night around 11 cuz i don't want to piss off my friends neighbors, and i had been going at it for about 12 hours at that point and was too tired to see straight.
so tomorrow i go back at it again, hopefully with a fresh mind and some green tea in hand i can have her running happily again by tomorrow night. i will keep you all updated, anyone have any thoughts or anything please post em (espec regarding the starter, scary stuff!), i will be checking the forum more tomorrow....

oh and if it comes down to me replacing the pan anyone got one lying around they want to let go?

one thing... Are you sure the distributor is on right? I remember you had to replace it which means you have taken it out. Did you set the crank to TDC then put the distributor in with the rotor pointing on #1 pin? If that is all right, then I guess next step is to chase the vac leak. You shouldn't have a problem chasing this since you know what you have taken out when you pull your whole throttle body and cleaned it out. But with the wrong dizzy timing it would sound almost like having a vac leak when the car is running.

thanks guys.
yeah i think its the timing. doesn't seem to be a vac leak got all the hoses connected, nothing cracked, tried chasing it down with TB cleaner and nothing changed the idle......
thought i had it on TDC but when i shined the timing light the mark was waay to the right of the bracket that has 0,5, 10 , then when i tried moving the dizzy it started idling like a vac leak. mark has been talking me thru it and i have the rotor pointing to no 1....so i am letting her cool down and am gonna find TDC per the BGB rather than the old skool way (put ur hand on no 1 and bump it till you feel air come out)............hopefully that is all it is....

How are you checking it? Try it with the diagnostic pin on Te1/E1 jumper and timing should be on 10degrees BTDC at idle.

See attached manual.

How She Sits for the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Figured id get some work done while the wheels go in for repair.

Looks like i got a head gasket leak?

I was told the tension rod bushings are what makes a terrible clunking noise when I am turning most of the time. Does this sound right?

Thanks for the help

Those are the sway bar end links. What does the clunking sound sound like?

What makes you think you have a head gasket leak???

yeah i have the hardcopy of the BGB in front of me and i was following it to the T, including very carefully installing the dizzy to make sure that the rotor is pointing to no 1 etc....

i believe that my TPS is toasted. here is why:
when i was cleaning the TB i also cleaned and inspected the ISC, which ohmed out to spec. i noticed oil coming from under the plastic cover of the TPS. i pulled off the cover and found oil residue inside, so i took some sensitive electronics parts cleaner to it and let it air dry. after doing this i noticed the BGB says "to avoid compromising the TPS funcion do not clean". oops. i tried ohming it out but the test is kinda complicated as you have to use an angle gauge and move the throttle plate to diff angles and each angle is supposed to have a certain amount of continuity, so i was kinda gestimating the angles...well i reassembled everything (as i went over earlier in the thread) and now here i am trying to set the timing but i just can't get her to idle properly at all. it makes sense to me that the ECU doesn't seem to know where the throttle plate is. i am gonna ohm it out again after i eat some much needed dinner and see what i get off of it....

lots of oil coming down from there, already getting taken care of.

Im not really sure how to describe it besides a clunking sound whenever im turning coming from my rear. Sounds like everytime the tire rotates a certain amount, while turning, it makes a thumping noise

Interesting...I'd have to hear it but I'm not sure what that would be.

If you have a blown head gasket you'll have water in your oil and other issues. It's probably coming from the valve cover

Hmmm... Looks like you need another set of eyes. 2 heads are always better than one.... I thought the initial problem was just the dizzy and the coil. Maybe they are not a problem afterall?... We all should totally have a meet somewhere in your area so we can help put her back up on her feet

Che.. that picture is underneath which is by the tranny.. Head gasket is between the block and the head. You should inspect there if you are leaking something not the bottom of the car. Or yeah, you'll have some white smoke. Check the oil from the dipstick and feel it. You can kinda tell if water water has started to mix.

yeah i wish i wasnt so far...
but the dizzy and coil did need to be replaced, i ohmed them out using the BGB and they were both WAY over. i also pulled my TB, EGR, and intake man off as the whole system past the PCV hose was heavily corroded (member the pics i put up a while back?). that is what drew my attention to the corrosion of the TPS....
the more i dig into this motor the more issues seem to come up, so i think its highly possible that a combination of things need to be replaced/overhauled, and the TPS is a potentiometer and those do wear out over time, especially if oil seeps in there from excessive PCV blowby...

i thought the TPS would be crazy expensive too but i can get it for about $50, i expected it to cost 2-3 times that, so if it is the TPS i am not too worried about it.
would be kinda relieved actually cuz then i would have found the problem which means i can button her up and start driving her again (so over the Volvo! )
