You could still crank it. It will just blow white smoke everywhere. That way you can see if it knocking. If he is telling you that there is no way to crank it he is trying to scam you. Cause running it too hot will kill the bottom end and warp those aluminum heads.

Yeah I found an es300 a couple months back with a blown head gasket and the guy wouldn't let me crank it so I didn't buy it.

yup it is a common problem for the 3vzs to blow head gaskets. We have two Camrys at the shop now with them blown.

the redline or fuel cut off? They'll run up to 7200 rpm before the fuel cut off.

Hey Andrew...the guys said it's been sitting for 3 years so I'm guessing the gas is unstable and the battery is dead I'm sure...So should I just take a battery with me and see if it starts up?

Yea take one with you and maybe a few gallons of good gas. It should still run on bad gas but it may skip and sputter running with it but still try to crank it to see if it has rod knock.

With it sitting that long he probably couldn't tell you how long or how hot they ran it. So cranking would def be something i would want to do if I were buying it.

K...I'll just take a battery with me and ask him over the phone if he'll let me crank it...

Hey Denny...the V6 makes a much different exhaust note that an I4 because of the number of cylinders and the bank angle.

Knocking = full rebuild needed = don't buy it?

not knocking = just replace head gasket = ok to buy?

At the moment I don't really care. Half the challenge is just getting it in and figuring everything out. I'd rather do it in steps. So I wanna get a working/running V6 in the car and work out any bugs and maybe smog it if I can. Then I will build another V6 on the side that I will swap in later with a LSD tranny...

I'm working on it. Gotta get the red car running first then I'm gonna go check it out next thursday. I'll take an extra car battery with me so I can try and crank it and check for rod knock...praying that he didn't ruin the engine by running it too hot

Yea with out it knocking all you would need to do is replace the head gaskets and resurface the heads.

With it knocking full rebuild and it could get expensive. So if it needed the full rebuilt he would probably be better off buying the motor from the junk yard or looking else where.
