Official SoCal V6 Thread...
This is for the people who plan to do a V6 swap or have already done one. This would include Davis and Other Mark (aka Mixxer).
List what swap you want to do, any progress you've made, and your starting car. |

My plans are for a fully built N/A 3VZ. Aiming for around 225 hp to the wheels. I've done all the research and priced it all out. Now i just need to save money and start building my 92 N/A.

Depends on the transmission I finally decide on. But right now here's what I'm looking at.
Cleaned and redecked block ~$700 Heads Ported and Polished ~$500 Port Matched Intake Manifold ~$200 10.5 Compression Pistons ~$650 Forged Rods ~$500 Rebalanced crankshaft ~$200 Sea2Sky Stage one Cams ~$550 Lightweight Flywheel ~$350 Full Custom Exhaust w/ high flow Cat ~$1000 Custom Cold Air Intake ~$100 Total: ~$4750 Add ~$1500 for e153 tranny with LSD. So I'm looking at a big money pit at this point. So we'll see how it all comes together... My other option I was looking at was doing a 97 1mz swap. Throwing in cams and decking the head to up the compression a little. That would put me around 200whp for a lot less money...just a way bigger hassle to wire up. But the gas mileage would be better Opinions? |

Nice... Well, I don't want to do too much work. Looking for something almost plug n play
....Let me know when you need extra pair of hands to work on your 2. I enjoy stuff like this. Maybe i'll change my mind then and come up with better alternatives as we work on yours .... I have an engine stand and have a source where I can borrow an engine hoist. |

Sweet...I might just have to take you up on that. The 3vz is the closest you're gonna come to a plug and play. Since the 3vz in stock form kinda sucks unless you're gonna supercharge it. If I decide to go a cheaper route I'll pick up a 1mz and do some simple bolt-ons. I keep going back and forth...what do you think?

3VZ with S54 and I'll be happy as a clam.
I'll just tear the engine apart and replace all the gaskets, belts, water pump and what not. Can't really give you a list since I don't plan on building it just yet, I just want it in and running. Don't want to be a life time member of the Engine Stand Club now! ![]() |

I'm getting more tempted to try something less daunting for my first swap. I've been considering doing a low mileage 3vz with some mild head work and cams and matted to a s51 tranny. The whole project would probably run around $2000 depending on how much I put into the custom exhaust.

So I originally wanted to do a 1mz but the wiring difficulty was the main thing holding me back. But if i'm not building the engine up I'd rather do a 1mz with cams and some mild headwork. It would keep it affordable and save weight and have much better gas mileage. Also I think it have a good amount more power than the 3vz because of the hp rating system change in 96. Anyways...I found someone who can do the wiring for me so I think i'm gonna send out the harness to them then do the 1mz swap with the s51 tranny. I'll probably go with larger runners on the headers to move the torque curve up. That way the stress on the tranny would be reduced off the line which could prove to be a little too stressful for the s-series tranny. Now I just need a cost affective LSD for the s51...any ideas???

Wiring is not that difficult as long as you have the color codes and schematics. I'm assuming what you meant by diffucult is just that its too much work? If so then I agree completely. Sometimes we either rather buy the whole thing made and/or have someone do that labor for us. Whatever your decision is I'm pretty sure its going to be the right one for your application. I feel that you are way knowledgeable enough to move forward with what you want.

Yeah...I honestly just don't want to put in the extra time. The 1MZ has a lot more wiring to setup and I hate messing with tons of wires. Plus if I mess up chasing down wiring problems sucks. I think I'm gonna end up going with the 1mz after all...it'll be better in the long run since I wanna stay NA.
