Clutch issues and advice

Hello All,

I finally fell victim to the clutch failure last weekend on the side of the 10 E at Indio, if any of you happened to spot a red MR2 on the side of the road, well, long story short I searched around, and found a few things wrong with my clutch from possible air inside the hydraulic lines, since the clutch sticks to the floor, then slowly surges out as well as accelerating the car, shifts were extremely slow, and additional to that my clutch slipped since from one trip the engine was racing, but the power was lost completely. Now that I got this out of the way, I need recommendation on clutches, I'm still new in clutch selections, I need advice on which set-up should I go with, since i want to track it as well. No matter which manufacturer, just looking for a reliable replacement.

Stock is very reliable but definitely not for racing so which way do you really want to go. Also, proper break in period (about 500+ miles) is a must otherwise you'll burn the clutch and will need a new replacement again sooner than you think.

I suppose if the car is more of a daily then you can go with a stage one kit (clutch, bearing, flywheel, pressure plate) by Exedy or another reputable brand.

Good luck.

it wont be a daily driver, since I have three others to do that instead, but can you guys walk me through the clutch break in procedure, or do they come in with instructions.

I'm sure most clutches are about the same... someone can correct that if I 'm wrong

My Google Map

i like the stock so i'm sticking with it once my clutch goes bad. which i predict will happen within the next 10k miles (when it hits 120k total miles)

Yup.. +1... Normal driving. Lets just say follow the traffic law rules. 25MPH residencial area, about 30-40mpg most surface street. 65mph highway for at least 500miles. That is usually the break in period.

So if its not daily, try to do a little more research on different kits. Light flywheel, Stage _ clutch, bearing, presure plate. I'm sure its been discussed somewhere on here or the other site (mr2oc)

500 mile break in period doesn't seem to be much, I can put that much visiting my mother in a weekend visit (400mile round trip). I'm still doing research on which stage clutch to use, the engine isn't stock and has an upgraded turbo, and engine internals, and I would hate to go stock, and blow that one within a few hundred miles.

I'm looking at a stage 2 kit, since I'm not really looking in to drag racing, just some track days, and canyon runs every now and then, thanks for the input.

You can upgrade it whenever you want. Maybe your question is more like when does it need to be replaced?

Check the BGB or call local toyota dealer. There should be a specification on how thin the flywheel is before you need to replace it. They last for quite a long time. You can have the flywheel resurfaced/lightened and balanced or simply buy an aftermarket one.
