Basic MR2 Question

Hey guys,

I've been enamored with the MR2 for years, and finally decided to further research it so I could possibly buy one.

Is the 1990-95 MR2 with the T Top available as an automatic (I'm unable to drive standard shift)? I've looked on various sites and all signs lead to yes, but after looking through classifieds for a while I've yet to see one.

Yes, only the NA models came with the auto option. Welcome aboard and Good luck with your search.

It will be more difficult to find as well. Sport cars come in standard transmission more often. Its a matter of learning though and once you do it will be cake. takes about an hour of practice to get the basics down.

Yeah I guess I could retry, but when I say I haven't been successful in learning to drive a stick shift that's an understatement.

I will add that they may be rare, but often are less expensive when you find them because many people prefer the 5 speed. I think I've seen one pop up every year and a half on my local craigslist.

Manual transmissions are really not difficult to learn and drive. Do you have some physical handicap that prevents you from using your left foot?

It took me 20 minutes of practice with a bad instructor to get the basics down enough for me to drive one without stalling or looking dumb. I taught another guy who had "tried and failed", and 5 minutes later, he was driving the vehicle around with no problems. He didn't even stall it.

The trick is, rev the engine slightly (like 2k rpm at first), and slowly release the clutch until you find the friction point where the car begins to move. Hold the clutch at that point until you are moving, then release it. To shift, just press the clutch pedal, change gear, and release... simple. Make sure you never stop without pressing the clutch pedal or shifting into neutral, or you'll stall the engine. That's pretty much all you need to know to get basic proficiency.

Honestly, I'm not really able to be cognizant enough as a driver to drive a stick shift. I appreciate the tips, though.

ha...sorry...i found this humorous...ik a few people that are incapable of drivin a stick and i laugh at them all the time when they ask to drive my car...

i am not at all good at driving a stick but guess what car i bought as my first car? i have drove 2 other times in my life and i am 23 so i am pretty much starting from a stick mk1. its a hell of a learning curve but to me its worth it. i hate when someone tells me they sold their sports cars because the woman they married refused to drive a stick. thats the most rediculous thing i ever heard. lets sell a car that you already have paid in full for a fraction of what its worth to trade for some POS car. trust me brother man, put the time in. it will be a wise choice!

I have seen quite a few in craigslist. here in california.

just get craiglist reader it makes life alot easier..
