Need Help, Smoking issues!!!

Alright so I purchased a 91 n/a with supposebly a 93t swap in it. The previous owner told me that the motor had 70k on it but I dont really believe it now after all the issues I've had with the car, either that or it's because it's a swap and maybe it wasnt done right. I bought the car in April and as I was driving the car it started acting up on me and left me stranded on the side of 95. Got the car towed, cost me another $350 after I bought the car for $6,000. The previous owner then came to my house and said he fixed the issue. At that time the issue was the alternator, so since I've had the car I've put a new alternator in it, new Downpipe, new 02 sensor, new speedo sensor, new wheel studs, wheels locks, fresh oil change w/ lucas stop leak sealant, I drained the tranny fluid and refilled with Mobil 1, I put new spark plugs in the car, new headlamps, etc. So i've probably put another grand in the car. After I got the car runing descent (I thought), then it started smoking heavilly, It doesnt smoke while Im driving but If I'm sitting at a light or in traffic it starts smoking pretty bad. I was told that it may be the turbo seals, the o rings, or the distributer cap and motor.

Also whenever I step on the brake pedal the whole dash lights up, I dont know if it's a ground or a short.

AND whenever I try to get on the car it'll choke, like it'll studder and hesitate. The check engine light will come on but the turn back off, I can only ease into it, but if I try to stomp on it or even steadily get into it it'll choke and studder.

FS: 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo! - VAdriven.com Forums

Above is the original FS thread from when I purchased the car, I was just to tempted but full of regrets now. But I do not want to give up on this project even though I'm having trouble tracking down these issues especially not having the financial needs after spending about $7500.

So if any of you guys can give me any type of advice or something. Another thing I failed to mention is I know a descent amount with cars but geting down and dirty is not my specialty. The most I've done is the downpipe and swapping the alternator which I was very proud of myself when I accomplished that.

Thank you all for taking the time to read my thread and giving your opinions.

The color of the smoke is like a grayish and it kind of smells like burning oil. The smoke is coming from the exhaust and some from the engine bay, but I'm pretty sure the smoke is only coming from the engine bay because I have an exhaust leak in the flexpipe of the exhaust. You can see the smoke leaking out and coming through the engine bay. But the smoke is definately coming from the exhaust.

I also failed to mention that I have no catalytic converters.

And what are lemon laws?

Thanks.

If you could pull the check engine code that would help a lot. #1 rule about these cars is that if that thing comes on, stop and check it out. It takes about 15 seconds to read it and it only costs a paper clip.

I wouldn't buy or replace anything until you pull that code, but the ignition is most likely the cause of the studder. Check the rotor, distributor cap and the wires. When you get the code post it up and it should give a lot more information.

The CEL only flashes then cuts right back off, it's only on for about 10-15 sec. My main concern right now is really the smoking.

The check engine code may or may not explain part or all of your smoking issues. If the check engine light comes on, it will be stored in the ECU until it is pulled or reset.

The smoking could be oil leaking into a cylinder. The symptoms described are very similar to what happened with a friend of mine. He starts the car to a huge cloud of smoke and while driving the smoke simply doesn't show up.

Check your oil level daily to make sure you aren't hurting the engine by burning oil off. Basically if the cylinder is leaking it will only get worse, but for the time being it can be driven as long as you take it easy and keep it topped with oil.
It's not really recommended, but we all know how things can be with not having a car.

Pull the code and see what that is telling you.

Ha..'93? sure... its maybe a '93 USDM turbo. My guess its a '92 usdm.

are you going through more than a quart of oil a day?...well, it could one of your rods is about to spin out and maybe a bad pistion.

By reading the previous for sale thread sounds like its been heavily molested. And its seen one rebuild before.

Do a compression test. That will tell your for sure if you something going wrong. Also get the 'check engine' code its showing.

When I start the car it doesnt smoke only after its been runing for a while or if I'm driving then come to a stop it'll smoke. I havent checked the oil levels, but I'll check tomorrow. I doubt i've been burning a quart a day but then again I havent been checking. I havent been driving the car because of the issue, I dont really want to risk anymore harm. I don't really have much money right now to get anything fixed. I've been thinking about getting a compression test but havent been able to come around to it. I'm trying to save up some money so that if the motor does have to get dropped I can do a few other things like put a headgasket and/or some other things.

I also believe its a usdm 92 because when I had to buy the alternator I purchased it for a 93 and I had fitment issues. I bought a Denzo alternator and it was a 100a and it fit fine and I had no issues. Also it has the funnel shaped extension at the throttle. How much does a compression test cost? How do I pull/check the code?

just get a compression tester at an auto parts store or maybe a parts store will do it for you. sounds like it might have a wasted ring. if it's burning oil real bad just make sure it has plenty of oil. I had a few cars that constant transfusions of oil kept them going for a long time.

Heavy smoke at idle is screaming bad seals in the exhaust side of the turbo, this is almost always the cause. Check your compression first, and if it checks out ok, I would definitely look into getting a new turbo or getting yours rebuilt.

I really don't trust myself to doing something like that, seeing how it says do it at your own risk or whatever. I checked the oil levels and the oil levels are fine. I still have to get the compression test done, so once I get that done I'll post the results.

Dude, that is really nothing to be afraid of. It says to do this in the toyota service manual, it's perfectly safe. The diagnostics plug is made for exactly that, plugging in terminals to help diagnose problems with the car. It's not there to make more problems!

Well I took my car to try to get the emissions done and unfortunately it did not pass, though I'm not surprised I kind of expected it. My sisters boyfriend has a friend that works at a local gas station and I thought some how he could've tweeked it, but he wasnt able too. He cleaned out the throttle body thinking it wouldve helped the readings but no luck. He and a coworker (who says he knows a lot about toyotas) checked the car out a bit about the smoking, They believe it could be either the headgasket, the valve seals, or the O rings. Another Tech that I know said the same thing, so I'm kind of convinced, but not sure if I want to try and do the valve seals and the headgasket first or just do it all at once. . A friend of mine that is a tech is coming by tomorrow and he's gona check the compression and I'm gona see if we can pull the codes. I'll keep this updated. Thanks
