Transmission swap
I Just purchased a second transmission for my mr2. It is from a rev 2 turbo.
I am wondering how much pain I'm going to go through because my transmission has a mechanical speed sensor , And I believe the new one is an electronic speed sensor. Am I going to be able to use this transmission? Is it something that I can change on the existing transmission? Like convert mechanical to electronic ? I've had a lot of problems with the mechanical sensor anyways... |

the turbo mr2 uses the same transmission just that the one with electrical sensor comes with synchros. you can put the elec sensor on your transmission but it's more involved as you need an the electrical gauge cluster/pigtails and wire it. it's not a bolt in affair as i have done it on a locals car

Ok thanks, so the main thing I would need is an electronic cluster? I was actually looking at getting another cluster anyway as my cluster is na.
How involved would it be to wire it all up? As it stands I get a CEL from the speed sensor with the mechanical, bit the car is Jdm turbo swapped, so I'm assuming it comes up because the ecu is not recieving a signal from an electronic sensor? |

i bet someone cut the spd sensor input to the ecu to disable the speed limiter. do you have cruise? and if so, does it work?
if so, there's nothing wrong with the sensor. the signal is tee'd to the CC and the ECU. the ECU doesn't do anything important with it. i'd just swap over the mech sensor and be done with it. maybe check the wiring to the ECU. |

I wouldn't doubt If some one cut the sensor wire for that purpose, S i've ran into some rather hackjob repairs that have been made to this car by previous owners. I know the sensor or related components are toast tho because I have no speedo at all. It started fluctuating for about 2 days then stopped working completely . This had been repaired by the dealer right before I bought the car(have the invoice). And it failed again less than 6 months later.
What I am doing, is installing a different turbo non LSD tranny, however existing tranny and speedo use mechanical sensor but the new one is using electronic sensor. What I want to know is... 1. What do I need to get to install the new tranny and have my speedo work properly and get no cel. 2. Can I swap another electronic vss into the old tranny once it's rebuilt with an LSD. And do I need anything other than just the sensor. Ie. Does it just bolt up to where the mech sensor was? Also ps. I do have cruise but no it doesn't work. This car is turbo swapped with jdm 3sgte. Car is sw21. |
