I have the pigtails...... Splicing the correct color coded wires from old connectors to the new pigtails that it came will allow for my new gauge electrical gauge cluster to work??????

No, do not rely on color codes, thats not how it works. you have to use/read/learn/get the wiring diagrams if you want it done properly.

Yeah, the wire color codes are very useful, but you really need to get comfortable with the schematics to make sure you get all the wires connected properly. I ended up building a spreadsheet to help me in my swap. ...and it did. I had first pass success on startup!
Any way that you do yours, just be sure to go over it a couple of times on different days to make sure you didn't route a wire or two incorrectly.

My speedometer recently broke on my '90 turbo. For a few weeks the needle jumped all over the place and then finally it just gave up completely and now just sits at 0 all the time.

I've done a bit of reading on this and it seems that it's a fairly common problem for either one of the cables or the sub-assembly to break. Also, it seems that the original speedo is not very accurate and there's no way to adjust it if you change the size of the wheels. An additional problem that I have with the stock speedo is that the limit is 180 km/h since it's from japan. So, now I'm looking at alternative options.

From reading this thread it seems that to go to the 93+ electric speed sensor would be a lot of work. Is there an aftermarket speedometer that I could use instead?

Are there any other options? I've been considering just getting a GPS but I'd really much rather have it working properly.

If I do end up just replacing the original cable, is there a way to adjust the speedo for larger tires or a different gauge face with a higher limit?

Thanks.

im guessing you have a jdm (not really clear about that) but you can put in the Chinese 260km or 300km trd module. but even if you do that your ecu has a speed limiter

yes it's jdm. i'll deal with the ecu speed limiter later. It doesn't kick in until somewhere around 190 anyway. i'm not really sure exactly where because the needle hit the bottom of the gauge before the speed limiter hit. (I imagine this has to do with gauge inaccuracy)

I saw the TRD speedo that you mentioned. I also just read a thread about a blitz one that goes to 280. I can't find anywhere that sells either of them though. I also can't find much information about them other than the fact that they exist.

I'd also still be left with an inaccurate gauge due to different sized wheels, unless those speedo's are adjustable somehow.

I think I've found a solution to the speedo reading wrong due to different sized wheels. It seems that you can change the little gears that are in the speed sensor at the transmission. There's some math that you can do based on tire size and gear ratios to calculate the number of teeth to get on the different parts inside the sensor. Then you just pick the right combination of parts to get the cable to spin as close to the speed that you want as you can.

I still have to do more research to see if it can be done with this particular engine but at least i know what i'm looking for now. If anyone has done this before on an MR2 please let me know.

I'm on to this as well, I got all the parts needed, the speed sensor is on its way.

Is there a guide for how to cut and splice the wires in order for the conversion to work with the 93+ pigtails, or do we have to read and learn which ways the wires work?

Anyone know which wires to cut & splice to get the 93+ pigtails working with the previous model cluster or should I pass it on to someone who has done it before?

I believe its been discussed before, but you need the following:
- 93+ electronic gauge cluster
- 93+ pigtails if not included with the cluster
- Electronic speedometer wire (hooks from cluster to speed sensor)
- Electronic speed sensor gear

Then its should all fit together.

I'm actually swapping out my mechanical speedometer to an electronic Intellitronix LED speedometer. The mechanical fitting is actually the difficult part because the signals match up pretty well to the available signals on the combometer. Of course, I had to swap out the transmission sensor for the electric one.

Sure. I'm going to try and do a writeup of this once I am done. I'm in the process of fitting the 9222 LED speedometer into the combometer cavity where the mechanical speedometer used to sit. Mechanically, I looked at the plastics last night and I think the two mounting bolts from the 9222 will fit at good locations. The only electronics that I need to add is a Pchannel FET and some resistors to send the speed signal over to the cruise control unit.

Okay. I got this working with the M9222. I'll start a new thread to show the writeup.
