mechanical to electrical speed sensor kit

I thought you could get a kit for using a jdm speed sensor (and engine) in a usdm gen2 mr2, anyone know if that's the case and where to get one?

Are you talking about putting the electric speed sensor into a trany that came with a mechanical?

you'll need more than that to convert to electrical, you need the cluster and the cluster pigtails. good luck finding the pigtails, those are rare and you may have to buy a whole dash harness to get it

To be honest I'm not sure if it was to change the car from mechanical to electrical or the engine from electrical to mechanical. I just thought I read about a kit.
Thanks guys, when i find the answer I'll post it.

To go from an electric trany sensor to a mechanical all you need to do is swap the senors, being that you car is set up for mechanical already. To go from mechanical to electrical is a royal bitch, I would just assume not do it if you car is not set up for it unless you just have time and money to blow.

I would like to know an answer because I plan do swap for a 93+ LSD trans. What I thought is all you need is:

electric speed sensor, a couple wires, electric gauge cluster (in my case just the speedometer face for a electric speed sensor - I don't want to change the gauge for mileage purposes)

To swap for the 93+ LSD you need nothing more than the mechanical sending unit that was in your car originally. It plugs into the tranny the same as the electrical sending unit.

Ben you'll have to change out the whole cluster, the speedo assembly are designed differently. you can swap any other guages but not the speedo. Also the reason why you need the pigtail is because the electric cluster uses smaller connectors. the 91 are way to big, even the connectors are larger.

P.S. changing the odo is easy, ive done it a couple times for fun

So you can take the odometer out separately, its not part of the speedometer face?

nope, the odo is part of the speedo pcb board. heck you can't even swap the faces as the 93 has a smaller numero slot

Bummer. I want to do the trans upgrade, but I want to keep the mileage accurate. I guess if I get a cluster with less miles than mine, I'll have to get some voltage on the cluster to spin the miles up from the workbench.

You can put your mechanical speedo in the 93+ trans. I have a mechanical speedo on my Gen3.

Very hard, but I remember someone on here doing it a few months back, I can't remember their name. If its not that big of a deal to you I would strongly suggest keeping what the car came with. I really looked into when I was doing my swap and it just looked like way bigger of a head ace than it was worth.

The car is mechanical now, with the 96 JDM tranny (and engine) to be swapped this week by yours truly. So hopefully I can use my mechanical speed sensor from my 91 usdm tranny.
thanks!

You can I did the same swap over the summer to my 1991 N/A. Mines a daily drive and the speed-ometer has worked great for the past 4 months with no issues at all. Was the car originally n/a or turbo? You have to have the mechanical sensor for the Turbo transmission.

Yeah your lucky plus when I did mine I didn't think to get a clip. It wasn't fun to have to go find all the stuff I needed (turbo hubs, axles, you see what I'm talking about). Well good luck with the swap.
