losing oil!!!

Hi guys,

A week or two ago my friend drove my mr2, and the car was misfiring and stuttering on boost, and he drove it hard causing the exhaust manifold to glow red hot, i guess im running lean too. anyway suddenly it was puffing out oil from the blow off valve, so i was like sh*t my turbo's busted, i let the car cool down then i drove it home then after that everything was normal again. no smoke from the exhaust. but i noticed that there is oil on the compressor side and in the pipes, a little more than normal. but i kept on driving it until i checked today that the oil was only at the tip of the dipstick! and i don't have no leaks. so it must be the turbo, but it still boosts fine. what can i do about this? what is broken on the turbo is it leaks oil? is it an easy fix? thanks guys..

hey mate, i had similar issues. Oil all over my compressor.. My problem was the oil catch can was throwing oil into the turbo.. So i had the catch can replaced with a proper one. Greddy ones suck. This resulted in blue smoke comin out of the exhausts on backoff which sucked. If your turbo seals are stuffed then you will need to rebuild the turbo / replace it / upgrade it.

It's time for a leak down test.

^ I agree. Could have popped a ring, blew the turbo seals, or messed up the PVC system.

The red light comes on when there is low pressure/low oil. The yellow light should come on when there is only about 2 quarts.

Ok guys, I've just had my oil, filter and plugs changed.. and installed a catch can.. i hope this solves it.. anyway here is a pic of my old plugs, can you guys tell me if there is something wrong? thnks

anyway, i also want to warn you guys to check the nuts and bolts of the air filter adapter on the AFM coz mine where lose!!! Imagine them coming off then get sucked in the turbo and into your engine!! now that would be a disaster!!

I'm by no means an expert on reading plugs but: Number 1 looks like it's been in there since the dawn of time!! Water in the spark plug well maybe? Number 2 is fouled, prolly coolant. Head gasket leak maybe?

The others have a relatively good face so the combustion is ok. Nevertheless there seems to have been blow-by on all except Number 2. Did you torque them right or maybe you're running extreme boost?

When I had my Turbo 2 every 2000 miles It would burn a quart and a half.
I always feared the yellow light....
You can take off the piping after the turbo to see if theres oil in there, thats one big indicator
If you havnt replaced your spark plugs in a long time, might want to check the distributor and wires too.

Let me get this straight, your engine wasn't running right so your friend's solution was to flog it? Hope he's not someone you rely on for technical information

plugs

when i rebuilt the head on my engine that is what my plugs looked like, it was a combination of headgasket leaking and the valve stem seals, mostly the seals, that is also what the valves in that cylider looked like(your #2 plug), it was a very slow and painful cleanup that resulted in me just getting new valves and seals and polishing the combustion chamber a little to get the rest off the head.

grrrr!! looks like it's time for a rebuild or gen 3 swap or even a v6 maybe.. I tested the car last nyt and it was still stuttering, I changed the fuel filter coz I thought that was causing it coz it was filthy! but still it stutters at high sudden (flooring it) boost, maybe the whole fuel line and injectors are dirty.. and oil is spitted out from the blow off valve at high boost!! thanks guys for your input.. I need to find a compression testing tool now..

I told him to take it easy because the car was stuttering at high boost, but still he drove it hard.. i should have turned down the boost when I lent him the car..

I wouldn't ever let him borrow anything valuable again. I'd say he owes you some money to help with repairing this.

If it was filled to the full line initially and is now over, and is all dark like that, it could be an indication of the engine running very rich. Does the oil smell like fuel? When you dump lots of fuel, a lot of it blows by the rings and dilutes the oil.
