gen III won't rev past 6000 rpms
i finally got my car road worthy for bc and insured. but after driving it, i was slightly dissapointed. when i first test drove the car, it was pretty powerful, but now it doesn't feel nearly as quick as when i test drove it. i tried taking it up to red line but it won't go past 6000rpms. i'm thinkin gits in some kind of safety mode. the car was sitting for about 10 months so the gas could've been bad but i filled it up with a fresh tank of 94. any ideas to what's wrong? i'm thinking something with the ignition?

If you're worried about the ignition stuff then check it out.
Pull some plugs and take a loot at the wires. One sign of bad ignition set up is that the problems are usually more pronounced at low rpm, it may have a slight miss, or run a bit rougher, and get a bit less power at low rpm. Another thing could be the ignition timing, i take my car to toyota to get ignition timing done, but people seem to say it's pretty easy to do yourself. What did you all do to get it road legal? How did you sort out the CEL? |

Could be ignitor... people who do gen 2-3 electronics conversions who don't use the right ignitor give themselfs a 6k rev limiter.

Yes the o2 sensors are the same. Can you free rev it (car sitting still in neutral) past 6000rpm?

you can just get one at a parts store, they're a little pricey, i paid something like 65 dollars for mine, but i was running it through a business account from where my mom works, expect more like 100 dollars or a little more, not sure though about the one for your engine.
Oh and the O2 sensor is pretty easy to change, at least it was on my mk1. You just need to jack it up and get passenger side wheel off, and get in there under the car. I found the hardest part is messing with that stupid electrical connector to disconnect the old one from the harness. But that's just because i fail at pulling apart electrical connectors ![]() |
