Hook up aftermarket tach?
Hey guys, I'm having ATS do a 3rd gen swap into my 93 NA, and I would like to install an aftermarket tach after I get my car back. Something like this: Twos R Us - Parts for Toyotas from Club MR2
Could anyone tell me how I can hook this up without messing with the stock tachometer? |

Easy, the tach signal is typically picked up from the negative side of the coil. No additional parts necessary.

I also wanted 2 know, after researching 4 a while I realized....the tach comes with 3 wires, red is power, black is ground, and the last wire is suppose to hook up to the negative side of the ignition coil, I never got around 2 installing it because it was too much work

To find the coil, follow the coil wire(the only ignition wire not going to a cylinder) from the distributor down to the coil. There will be an ignitor stacked on top of it. The coil(the black one) will have 2 wires going to it. Use a volt meter and find the one with 12 volts with the ignition in the on position. Now, ignore this wire and use the one beside it(this will be the coil ground). Yes, your factory tach will work at the same time as the aftermarket tach.
