another "what should i do" thread

ok so i have been debating on whether or not to keep the 5sfe or upgrade to the 3sgte or beams. but then again i could turbo the 5sfe. ive always liked the 3sgte and the amazing aftermarket possibilites. but the thought of a beams or tuboing my motor has always crossed my mind. i havent really looked for aftermarket stuff for the beams so im not too sure about the availability of parts and im not too sure about the reliability of a turbo 5sfe. so i guess my question is this: for the money and the availability of aftermarket parts, which swap or setup is the best. im not looking to get tremendous amounts of power, i just want something better than what i have and something to be able to add on to as i go. plus, i want some reliability. i know the turbos have their issues, but all motors do. so give me some suggestions about pricing, power, aftermarket availability, and so on. any info would be greatly appreciated.

i will be doing all the labor at work so labor isnt the issue. price really isnt either, but i dont want to spend too much and not gain enough. what is the hp rating for the beams anyway? the redtop has more hp correct?

Not really a beams expert but yes I THINK the redtop has more, From what I've seen they have 210hp and if you get a 3s depending on the gen can have from 225 to 245hp I believe.

ive seen some 3s's getting 200 some 225 some 245. but for the beams to be all motor, no turbo, 210 is pretty damn good. and pretty close to the power of the 3s. what are prices like for the beams? are they hard to find?

price for a beams isnt horrible, just good luck finding parts anywhere but the dealership, and as for upgrading, after you get it in unless you build the motor, there isnt much left, but when u have boost such as the 3s you can gradually (as you said you wanted) gain more power, whether with bolt ons, or with a fancy manual boost controller, which if you have one, you add 50 HP at the turn of a knob....so its up to u, if you want breathing room and parts availability, gen II 3sgte is the way to go...

The beams i found were pretty damn expensive.. Prices I saw were from 3,500 to 5,000, they are pretty powerful for being N/A..Scared me the hell away, but there might be some places where you can get them for cheap..The only place I can think of is MR2warehouse.com...Yes the 2nd gen is believed to have 225 and the 3rd gen has 245..

ok i went to naganojapanese.com and they have what looks to be a celica 3sgte (because of the top mount intercooler) that makes 265 for $2k. does this sound right?

LSD was an option in the US from 93 and up and in japan i think the same, however, the gen III's didnt all have LSD, it was an option but MOST of them have it....265 on a celica, ive read that a couple times, but it depends on which gen it is, i think they are all the same as the mr2 3s, of coure the original alltrac had the gen I but in terms of Gen II i think everything is the same as the mr2 except the TMIC

I'm not going to comment on on the 3sgte or the 3sge because I have no personal experiances with them. I do, however, have a turbo on my 5s. This is more of an ongoing project thing, rather than a put it in and forget about it till the HP bug bits again thing. If done right the 5sfte is awsome! but if done half azz, BOOM. relyablilty depends on the care taken before hand. I spent over a year researching and finding parts to do mine. If you decide to try this there is a member selling his setup for $900 or so.
