HOW TO: Change distributor cap and rotor

Here is a kwik write up on how to change your distributor cap and rotor. This was done on a 93T with no egr system which may make it a little easier than those of you who still have your egr.

You will need:
8mm socket
philips screwdriver
rag
new dist cap
new rotor
I chose oem toyota replacement parts

Approx cost: $40

Approx time: 15-30min

First off remove all the spark plug wires from the distributor cap. Unhook and slide up the plastic cap and the wires will just pop out. No need to mark them seeing as how the distributor cap and the wires should be numbered. You may need to unhook the one vacuum hose to give you some more room. Once the plug wires are out remove the ignition wire the same way. Next take your 8mm socket and remove the two bolts on the distributor cap. They should be directly across from each other. Once those two bolts are removed set them aside as you will be reusing them. Ok, so you are now ready to remove the rotor. Take a good look at it, remembering exactly how it is positioned as it will only go on one way. This will make the reassembly go much smoother. There are two philips head screws located in the centerish of the rotor, they are less than an inch a part and are recessed. I was unable to get the one with a philips screwdriver but a flathead got it right out. Save these screws as well. Your rotor should now pop rite off.

Reassembly is pretty much self explanitory, just reverse the process. Wipe off any oil or dirt before putting it back together. If there is a bunch of oil chances are you need to replace the seals in your distributor which is a whole differant deal.

After replacing my cap and rotor i noticed better idle and acceleration immediately. I was delightfuly surprised and happy with the result.

Thanks for the write ups. I never thought that replacing a distributor cap would be easier as it may seem like a very big job.

Shouldn't you re-check the timing with a timing gun to make sure it's dead on after doing this?

no, you don't unbolt the distributor, so it's unnecessary

It happens but I'm sure if he had done to his mustang you had done to your MR2 the tables would turn. No replacement for displacement but I still like the look and feel of the MR2 more. There is love for a car and then there is performance.

The ebay ad is mislabeled. 91-95 MR2's (USDM or JDM) did not use the same style of wires. 91-92 or Rev1's used push on style wires, and 93+ or Rev2/3 used clip on style wires. The ones you linked look like push-on's for a Rev1. If so, then to use it you'd need a Rev1 distributor cap. I believe the coil terminal is also different between Rev1 and Rev2/3, so to use the coil wire in that kit, you'd also need a Rev1 coil.

Your best option is to sell them and get the proper wires for your car. OEM wires work very well, though I hear OEM parts can be ridiculously more expensive overseas than on this side of the pond.

You are right "Sang" about the ridiculous prices here in Europe, and especially in the country of Sweden.....
OEM wires, plugs and distributor costs about 300-320$ here!!

I REFUSE to call them Oreillys!! haha, I will forever call them Schucks, and that will never change.

OP: I'm glad you posted this, Although I was pretty confident that this was the process, I am now reassured and am going to do this tomorrow. I already ordered the dizzy cap and rotor from SCHUCKS to make sure my local one had it in stock. (there was only one in the area and they had it shipped over to the one by my school.)
