Update and driving impressions

I cleaned up the install today, double checked everything and did a garage alignment. (Hey, I'm usually within .15 degrees on camber bye eyball.) Time for an extended test drive.

First I drove it to fill up with premium. It had about 5 gallons of 87/97 mix in the tank already. I just took it easy on it for several miles. After the fill up, I got on it. >

It felt and sounded great, but didn't seem to have as much power/torque as my buddies lightly modded WRX. Well, luckily he was stopping by, so we went for another drive. I noticed that it is idling down about 750 now, also.

Second time around, we were easy for about 5 miles pass full warmup and then got on it. This thing is FAST. Real fast. I let my friend drive it home and he said it was comperable, if not a little faster than his car.

I'm going to get it dyno'd in the next week or two and we'll know for sure. Plus, I have a full set of gauges on the way this week: boost, oil pressure and oil temp.

I'll try to post up a ton of pictures this week after I free up some web space.

Congrats man!

Hopefully I will pick up my car tomorrow, just got some leaks & gaskets replaced, and tomorrow hopefully will be the first test drive.

BTW, how long did it take you to swap out your fuel pump?

Sam

The fuel pump can be done in one day, I took my time and did it in about 8-10hrs.

I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't replace their fuel pump while the engine is already out.

I'm having some problems with mine and I have no time to work on it.

My clutch master cylinder from the NA just wasn't up to the increased pressure of the Spec clutch and leaked down. I'm going to rebleed it and try again, but I went ahead and ordered a Turbo clutch master cyl.

Now the car won't idle when cold. It fires right up and dies. If I keep my foot on it ~1K rpm for a few minutes, it will idle...but around 500rpm and pretty rough. It runs PERFECT with any throttle input, it just doesn't want to idle right.

I checked the grounds and vacuum hoses and couldn't find anything loose.

I'm apparently going to have to get a throttle cable fabricated. Nobody can get new cables and I can't find any stock cables for a non-cruise turbo car. My cruise control actuator from the NA is too big to fit next to the intercooler, so I can't use it.

issues issues issues. My clip was 3 weeks late initially. I knew I'd be busy this summer, so...... It doesn't look like I'll be able to get it "done" for at least the next 4-6 weeks now. I've got zero free time.

I ran the throttle cable straight to the throttle body instead of to the cruise control actuator. I had to remove a plastic spacer underneath the pedal, but otherwise, it works fine. If you don't remove the spacer, the cable will be a bit too short and the throttle will be partly engaged all of the time. I also still have the turbo cruise control actuator. I don't know if it's smaller or not, but you are welcome to try it.

I'll try it this way....right now my cable is routed behind my IC, so I'll have to take all that stuff out to move it around. Oh...and it threw the AC belt off somewhere, the idler pulley bolt came loose.

Grr...and it won't idle right now, which is a more pressing issue.

I don't think cruise will be an issue....I'll be wanting full control of my pedal all the time.

Git r done!

I've been super busy with work, and will be for another 2 weeks. Look for some updates after that, including the walk-through for wiring a Gen3 into a USDM NA body harness.

The car is running, on 4 wheels, and has an exhaust. Things left to go:

Replace broken VTV.
Fix/adjust IAC ( I determined this to be the cause of the idle issue )
Replace the AC idler pulley, which was lost on a test drive yesterday.
Solder / heat shrink wiring at ECU.
Re-route throttle cable.
Install senders and gauges: Autometer sport comp boost/ oil temp / oil pressure
Wash and wax.
Alignment
Increase life insurance policy, because this thing is fast as balls.

You are awesome man!! This is definately the most interesting write up I've ever read. I feel like I just saw the cliff hanger at the end of a season finale, and now I've gotta wait all summer til the next season's premier.

The turbo one will fit. You will have to use the NA bracket that attaches to the throttle body though.

Most people aren't able to get the CC to work anyway (even if you have the CC pulleys and crap). I think the GenIII ECU controls the CC differently than genII or something.

Nope....mine works. I rewired instead of trying to 'make it work.' I think that rewiring is just as easy as an uncut harness....esecially after I get around to publishing a step-by-step.....once I get enough free time to actually do something. Maybe this fall.

That's allot of work. I dont think changining the fuel pump takes one day especially if you run into problmes or break some thing. It's best to take your time and do it right. You want to make sure is done right other wise you might find yourself with a big ball of fire.

Do you mean that you think it will take longer than a day? I have the engine out of the car right now and changing the fuel pump is a lot easier

When I did my swap to a supra fuel pump, my motor was still in the car. It's not as easy as you think even with the engine out. Wait till you have to seprate the metal fuel line that has been there for over 10 year. Also if you strip them good luck.

The fuel pump install was one of the low points of the swap process....mainly due to the awkward angles required. You could do it in a couple of hours with a lift, though.

I did it today. That line isn't bad. The worst line on the MR2 (IMO) are the 2 coolant lines that feed the heater core. Those lines are so screwed on my car, they barely resemble circles anymore.

Did you do yours with or without motor?

Without the motor. I chewed those brass lines up, too.

They don't leak, though.
