I recently found out that my engine with around 300,000km is coming due for a change. The turbo is also apparently leaking a bit of oil as well. I'm trying to decide exactly what to do next.
I'm looking to keep the car what it was - a reliable daily driver with a bit more punch than when it came from the factory. I don't mind spending a few dollars where it will pay off, but I have no desire for a 350+ RWHP monster that constantly needs time and money to run properly. I *think* I still have a JDM 3S-GTE sitting in an old friend's garage, though the turbo is gone. It would have been sitting for enough years that I wouldn't consider putting it in without a rebuild. With all that, what are my best options for a fresh engine in my 2? Rebuild the engine with stock internals and have the turbo refurbished or swapped for something else? Are non-stock internals or valve train components generally suggested in certain areas? Is there anyone making crate motors which are often cheaper than rebuilding? Are there other options I'm not considering? Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Last edited by TheSentinel; 03-09-2010 at 06:38 PM.. |

First, make sure its your motor that needs replacing. It might just be fine. If your motor actually needs replacing then here's a great option: Gen3 3SGTE Swap (Including LSD Transmission) FREE SHIPPING

Hi Baktasht,
The engine just had a pretty poor result on a leak down test. A few questions on the 3rd gen: Am I reading it correctly that it's *everything* required for a swap? As in plug-and-play? Do you ship to Canada? Is getting parts for that JDM much more difficult than for a USDM gen 2 engine? |

It is a very simple swap. What year is your current vehicle and is it a JDM/USDM/CDM vehicle? We can set you up with all the correct parts you would need to make it all a drop in installation.
Yes, we ship to Canada. Getting parts for the Gen3 3SGTE is not that difficult. Most parts are the the same or can be ordered. A couple of small things have to be ordered from Japan that we can get for you if you ever need. |

Hi baktasht, the Gen3 is looking like the way to go, especially at that price. I have a 91 CDM.
Is there any difference between a 93 USDM tranny and the one that comes with the Gen3? I've had a 93 with axle shafts in my parents' garage for years, but I was waiting to blow a clutch as an excuse to put it in. |

Oteck, I have a good friend who runs a marine shop. If I were to rebuild, I would have him do the rebuilding and my usual mechanic to do the install.

Hey baktasht,
You must be one of the more knowledgeable people on Gen3 swaps. Since your engine comes with the engine wiring harness, but not the body harness, which connector(s) exactly need to be repinned to make the swap work? I'd much rather hand my mech diagrams with pinouts than pay him to look them up. |

There are many different variations of wiring on the MR2 body harnesses. So it's a bit difficult to provide a straight forward diagram. It basically comes down to, put the wiring diagrams in front of you, study them for a while, and go at it.
The engine harness comes complete with our engine swaps, so its just a matter of plugging it in. The body harness is the only part where you'll need to splice a few wires. If its a 93+ car, then it's nearly plugnplay going to a Gen3 3SGTE. If its a 91/92 car, it's a little bit of wiring, but nothing that's too difficult. Is your car currently a turbo or non-turbo? |

My current car is a 91 turbo.
So is it just one plug where the ECU and body harness meet that needs to be rewired? Edit: Also, is it possible to get the body harness along with the engine and ECU harness? Last edited by TheSentinel; 03-22-2010 at 07:07 PM.. |

I try to keep as many gen3 body harnesses in stock as possible for those that want them instead of repinning their existing harness. If you'd like to do that we can set you up with a body harness as well.
