3rd gen shopping

I'm getting ready to make a purchase for swapping my currently dead N/A. However, I'm not sure what the price tag difference is between all of them. I've found them on ebay for 2200$ and that doesn't include axles, intercooler, etc. all the way up to about 4000$ some of these where through different websites. Some where from vendors here.

I've also seen gen2's(my not so favorite choice) ranging from 1500$-3500$. Most of these price ranges are vary whether its a clip or someone who's gutted for "required" parts.

What's the fair average for this kind of thing. Is a clip that important, I realize I won't have the body harness without one, but as far as I can tell it's doable without. So I'm just having a hard time determining what causes such a huge fluctuation in price.

i would suggest a clip, because you get everything with it. everything is easier, and you can sell the stuff that comes with it that you dont want.

When you bought it from EMS, what all did you need to get after that?

**EDIT**
more specifically did you get axle's and that sort of thing. Was it just getting(if you where N/A before) turbo cables for tranny and intercooler?

It says on his site what it comes with. off the top of my head it's engine LSD tranny uncut engine harness axles. No intercooler and turbo shifter cable is about only thing it doesn't come with.

I'm preparing to do the same swap, I'm using ems for it. I'm just pre purchasing all the extras I want like gauges intercooler intake exhaust ect.

I'm in the middle of a Gen III swap right now with a motor from EMS. See my post here

Joining the Gen III Swap Team

The motor came with the harness, axles, gen III ecu, LSD tranny. I could just drop it in, but I am going a little beyond a stock swap.

Nice, I told him initially I wasn't gonna be able to get one from him based on price, but really I think price vs quality EMS is about the right way to go. I'm not to big on ebay, I've been burned on car parts many times before.

So I'm happy to hear the quality is there for what you're paying for. Lord knows the current economy I couldn't afford to fix a bunged engine from some ebay warehouse.

i was thinking of going with a genIII swap too and wanted to know if i should buy a clip or just a engine swap? my car is a 92 na. i have been gathering parts to build a genII but i still need a motor to to put all my parts into and turbo hubs and engine/body harness so i was thinking of selling all my parts and just buying a gen3 swap. my hp goal that i really wanted was 400 but after being in a 350 stock long block genIII with bolt on i can settle for 300-350 and i think a 3rd gen is best for me. sorry for jacking your thread but i notice we are kinda in the same boat.

bret, what all did you still have left to get after the purchase. So far I've purchased turbo shifter cables and exhaust. I know I need intercooler. What did you do about axles and associated parts?

IN an effort to keep all my posting logical and in one place, I will post my swap progress in here.

So far progress=0%, Swap from EMS, all motors they got had bad compression, still waiting on that. Exhaust - This may arrive this coming week. Turbo Shifter Cables - hopefully this week as well.

I still need an intercooler(cheap i'm almost out of money lol) and axles(found some and hope the guy doesn't sell them before I can drive up to Seattle to get them.

So My time line is coming up, I'm really having to do this in a small space of time. I'm starting to get gray hairs, so to keep my spirits up, everyone tell me how easy this! Make me feel like this is a breeze.

Grey hair is easily remedied with some hair dye. Rushing this along with cost you trouble the rest of the life of the car.

This is my first swap and so far I have found this to be more easy then I expected. The only trouble has been bolts that were either really stuck, or broke off when you remove them. New bolts are easy to find, just have the tools and patients to deal with it when it happens.

It will all come together for you in the end and you can be proud.

Thumbs up

I'm borrowing this thread, if you guys don't mind.

I'm thinking about upgrading my mr2 for a 3rd gen engine but since I live in Europe I think about buying it straight from Japan (I don't feel there's any good reason for me to pay the shipping twice, first from Japan to US and then to Europe).

My question to you; Where can I find a well functioning in Japan?
Do you know any good websites or contacts that could prove useful?

Thanks in advance!

If you're looking for a swap, you might want to consider Josh at ChicoRaceWorks - Your MR2 Specialists. His is a little more expensive, but includes the body wiring harness and he's really good to work with and always responds to any questions or problems very quickly.

I really wish I'd spent the extra few dollars to get my engine from him instead of just the extra parts.

Well, as it stands right now I bought an engine swap on 7/16 form ems and am still waiting. I'm a little disappointed as I have my brother here whom is very mechanically inclined and I planned this to get as much help as I could. Seems as though I probably won't really be able to take advantage of it though. He leaves on the 19th, which really sucks.

So those who've done this themselves and have never done and engine swap before. What kind of timeline did you run on? I really don't want it to take me months to get done. Any feedback is appreciated.

It can be done fairly fast. It all depends on what you want to do. I wanted to paint a bunch of parts, clean my engine bay, wire tuck, etc.

Just dropped it again and I'm redoing everything I did before because I want a different color scheme and this time I'm painting my engine bay.

If it's just a drop motor and install new motor kind of thing, a few days should be enough.

to double check, are the n/a engine mounts compatible with the 3sgte? I seem to find conflicting information on this.

**edit**
To clarify for anyone whom may have asked themselves this question, no they are physically different and turbo mounts are required. Hope this helps should anyone ever need the information.
