I really hope he gets well soon and I'm glad no one else was hurt.
I have to say, I'm a bit annoyed at the fanaticism of that article. "He had bald rear tires so he must have been drifting!" I can't possibly be something like the rears wear out 3 times as fast with normal driving or anything, right? I don't know the details, but like around here, if a young person ever has an accident in a sporty car, it's always racing. Maybe it was, I dunno, but the news outlets are quick to play that card regardless. At any rate, everyone be careful out there.

I also thought that part of the article was annoying. Annoying that they would write that even without verification.

Yea, that's exactly what I was thinking when I came across that part of the article. I just swapped out my rear tires because they were balding, and the fronts still have more than 50% tread. Granted, I did autoX and some track days, but these media guys would be quick to call me a "racer" with all that negative connotation. I like their quote, ''If you are a parent and you see your kid has a fire extinguisher and harness in their car, it's time to have a talk with them before they wrap themselves around a pole,'' he said. ''It's no different than finding a pot pipe in your kid's pants." So I guess prepping my car for sanctioned competition would put me on the same level as a pot-head. Hooray for journalism. |

You know, it sucks that the guy is hurt, I hope he gets better.
But, in all fairness, it seems pretty obvious that in THIS case, it was street racing. It stinks that I get harrassed by cops because of my car because other kids are racing illegaly. I've worn out my rear tires too, and I noticed a big difference in traction, so this guy was not only reckless but also foolish racing without basic safety gear, like proper tires. |

legal racing isn't that hard to get into... and when you consider the actual costs of something like this happening...
