Sup Ben, 5S MKI eh? So what can I help you with? And where are you located? James' car is still here, cause he's still recovering. Havent gotten a chance to do the tune-up on it yet, soon though, i'm gettin tired of pushing it around, haahaa. It's an 87 with 91 5sfe. Basically everything from the firewall back is all second gen. If you were close enough, i'd get it running here soon and you are welcome to come down and check it out. If you missed it, James blew up the engine in the summer and we had to swap in another one, haha.
On another note. I was asked to make a list of people that are allowed to use my account at Discount Import Parts. They like all of you, but they dont want anyone abusing the privilige. So I'm starting a roll call, which by the way should include yr phone numbers. Dont post the info here, you can call me or swing by the shop or email me. This way I dont get asked about parts I have no idea what are for, LOL. I'm gonna try and get the digi cam from my sister some time here soon. I thought it might be a good idea for a step by step, for when i design and fabricate my front strut brace. Same with the underpanels. Anyhow, sorry i've been hard to get a hold of, been very busy with work and projects. Yr best bet is to just show up at the shop if you need me, hahaahaa. |

so did you get those under body panles then the week before for the car? I know jason's got a digi cam as well so I'll ask him next time I see him.
good idea about the parts thing. I usually have the guys at brodway asking me about if I'm getting parts for you, strange how that works ![]() whats the shop looking like for the weekend. I really need to do one or the other this week as well as passing emissions, I asked DIP about the drivers side axel but I guess they didnt carry them. I figure I'll find out how much they want one at brodway just for fun tomorrow cus I got to get some stuff for the 1st gen. I was thinking of getting some of those urethane bushings that high and tight makes for them so if anyone wants anything from them as well let me know so we can save on shipping. |

Project updates:
Corolla: Ordered MORE fuel system parts. I hope Zai is ready to do some double flairs! Coolant catch can and T-filler neck off of a MK1 have been acquired. 91 MR2: 85% of blue "dog" interior has been removed. Headliner drivers side panels, dash, steering wheel, are all that are left. Pondering ordering up some dynamat to install while I have the car torn apart. 95 MR2: Pondering her fate. . . ================================================== ===== Seth: What's the website for high and tight? I might be interested in some of their products. Vince: Remind me I owe you some cash for the overflow bottle and T-neck for my corolla cooling system. |

Hey Zai. Yeah, I'm looking into a 5S swap, but not soon. Spring break at the earliest. I am driving my 85 about 500 miles a week right now, I live in Junction City (about 20 minutes north of eugene) and go to OSU 5 days a week, and work at sacred heart hospital, right by the U of O campus. Next term my dad is going to start helping me out with school again, and since I already took out some loans for this year since I didn't know he would be helping me (he quit his job in the spring and went to africa for the summer) so I am thinking about asking him to buy me a nice commuter, not sure what yet, just waiting still. My car gets about 30-31 mpg which is adequate but could be better. If I had another car I would be paying less for gas and would be able to retire my Mr2 from street duty. It has 324,000 miles on it anyways.
I have a lot of other stuff I am saving my money for, but I think a 5S swap could be done pretty cheap. I am not looking for a powerhouse car. My car is fun already as it is. With this motor it would probably get better gas mileage. Plus this workshop thing sounds like a great way to troubleshoot problems. My brother has had an 240sx RB20 swap going since June and it's still not running. I don't really want to get into a situation like that. I also am on the OSU formula SAE team, it's my first year, and while I don't have access to the shop, other people do and that's a big resource. I am going to look around here in junkyards for some motors and wait for one to fall in my lap. I definitely have other things to take my time up than engine swaps. But as far as custom work goes... you have done a couple of these before, I hear. I know engine mounts will be custom. Do the mk2 axles fit into the mk1 hubs? Exhaust, I could probably do that myself, or maybe just use the mk2 system if it will fit. And wiring, I personally have no experience with wiring, I suck at it, so unless I could get help/walkthrough from you guys, I would need to contract that out to someone else. Is there anything else that really needs to be done? I helped out a lot with my brother's RB swap over the summer, but there was very little custom work that needed to be done—the crossmember from the skyline bolted right up to the 240 unibody, complete with engine mounts and all. very easy to do. I'm coming up to portland the weekend of finals week (dec 9/10), so if you guys will be meeting on saturday morning, I will show up and hang out with you all for a little bit. Also, if anybody knows of a cheap 5S-FE motor sitting around let me know. Thanks alot, fellas, you are all very friendly guys. Ben |

Wells, depends on what you mean by cheap, haha. I just gave chris two 5sfe's, one needs a rebuild and the other has a hole almost as big as yr fist in the side, LOL. We can source parts pretty effectively, since there are a bunch of us and we are always looking for good deals on stuff.
Far as the 5s swap goes. Things that fit together, 5sfe, S54 trans( NA trans ), S54 axles, modify two of the existing trans mounts, build two custom mounts for rear of trans and front of engine, custom bracket for one shifter cable( so you can use the stock cables), 87+ hubs( they are direct fit with the axles above), MKII exhaust is optional( got a good spare one right now), Junction box #2 from MKII( would be best to have one), 5S ecu, 5S engine harness, starter relay, we relocate the battery to the trunk and cut out the battery holder in the engine compartment so battery box is a good idea. I have a decent write up on the wiring( it varies a little from year to year). Prob be a good idea to come up some time and look James' car over so you get an idea how it looks and how things fit. |

Well that sounds very reasonable. There's a wrecked AW in the junkyard near my house, I am not sure if it's pre-87 or post, but I need to go pilfer some parts off it soon, and I will check, it's wrecked on the front end but if it's post-87 we can use those hubs. I don't think there's any junkyard mk II's in the eugene area, so if you could keep an eye out for a spare (hopefully running) 5s motor and wiring stuff, and let me know if any becomes available up there, that would be killer. Also, the engine/transaxle mounts: Can you build and modify those for me? I would pay you for it, if you don't charge too much...
Far as this workshop thing goes, sometime next year, either spring break or summer, do you think we could do the swap in the shop? Idunno how it all works exactly and if anyone would be available to help. But that would be killer, since my mom wouldn't be hip on the idea of using her garage for another swap (my brother dominated the entire garage for almost five months with his swap that still isn't done) and my dad is planning on moving to albany come spring. Then I would actually have all the tools I need when I need them too. I will plan on visiting the shop on the 10th of december, a saturday, I am way too busy and sick of driving to make a trip to portland during school. Thanks again for your help Zai. |

sleep, need more sleep. Still have the 1mz's. Think Seth's engine is a 00 or 99. Think they are rated around 200hp and 210 ft lbs. Hopefully , if Leng doesnt forget, again, i'll drop off yr rims for you. 5v is only rated at 190 hp 220 ft lbs.
Hey Conner, nice to see you found us, haha. We have a sign up sheet for projects Ben. I can build/modify the mounts. It usually takes about 3 weeks to do, since we dont work on it 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week, haha. You will need to decide how you want the engine mounted though. When i built the beater, I cut the engine latch and welded the engine lid to the trunk lid so the engine could sit higher. In James' car, we didn't do that mod so his engine sits 2 inches lower. There is a lot of other things that can be modified the way you want it. The engine fan in the Beater was wired to a switch under the radio. James decided not to wire his in. We installed a custom filter set-up made from a spare honda cold air kit, haha. So his cone filter sits 6 inches away from his TB. We modified a MKII exhaust so it fit up underneath his 87. Kinda nice with the twin tips, sounds just like a MKII. Haven't needed to change fuel pumps so far. There are some coolant hoses that need to be customized, we usually scrounge for them at the wrecking yards, LOL. Stock radiator seems to work fine. The rest of the stuff is usually transferred over from your original set-up. We usually try and build cars as cost effectively as we can, so we modify a lot of things and scrounge. Seth V. brought up point about going to the dyno. I may have a source for us to use a dyno for a decent price but we will need to do it as a group to get the most out of it. Just figured you guys may want to start thinking about it, not anytime too soon though. |

Thanks again Vince for the awesome help on the front brace. It is definitely strong and not bad looking, haha. Would've liked to take some pictures but dont have the digi cam. Busy day today but we got a lot of things done. Got James' car running, runs pretty good, but pop'ed a cv when i test drove it. Guess them old axles dont like high rpm launches, heh. So I'm on the hunt for a right side axle for an S54 if anyone has a lead. Charged the battery in Project91 ane cranked the engine over a few times to get oil back up into the engine. Dang I've got to get this beast running...*sigh*.....
