Project: Beat the Heat

Project scope: Beat the Heat has approached Moua Bros to build a car for them. Their current car is a V8, American Muscle, type of ride. It appeals to a certain type of crowd. What they are looking for from us is to appeal to the import crowd while remaining competitive.

Project Requirements: Make the car too slow and everybody will laugh. Make the car too fast and no body will want to run it. The best time their current car has run is a 13.000 flat. In addition they are talking about adding nitrous to make it a bit faster.

Current MR2 weight and power that the shop has built and weighed:
Sethw: 2517 lbs. dry, with driver. est. 200 rwhp. so that's 12.59 lbs/hp
Zai: 2356 lbs. wet, with driver. 198 rwhp. so that's 11.9 lbs/hp

Suggested Weight: 2,500 lbs (wet /w driver)
Suggested Qtr Mile Time: 12.735 seconds
Suggested Horsepower: 305
Suggested Chassis: Toyota MR2

Transmission: S54 (na tranny) or E153 (Turbo tranny). We have both available. Either on is non-LSD at this time.

Power Plant: We currently have a the following available: 5SFE, 3SGE, 1MZFE, 3SGTE (head only)

Engine Data:
HTML Code:

Thanks for getting that up there Chris! At this point, even though we're not to the building stage, we really need to get a "team" assembled. As Zai said, this is a good change for some of those who are new to the shop to get their feet wet, but it will also be a great area for some of the more experienced crew to hone their skills, and possibly do some teaching. I know that a couple of you have expressed interest, but we need an official commitment from you. Lets start a roll call now. If you are going to be a part of this project, please post here so we can get a headcount. Also, please post some contact information, so we will be able to get in touch with you and let you know about build dates, events, etc.

If anyone needs to get ahold of me, my cell is (503) 704-3860.

ROLL CALL!!!

I'll be here, along with steve. The shop project will have full access to the shop and every contact in the automotive field that i have. I know people at two engine machine shops: Bearing Serivces and Paolo. We can get access to the dyno in Oregon City. I've recently aquired an Innovate stand alone data logging system. I've got a brother in-law that works at a machine shop that can fabricate anything that we may need to have custom built, ie: flanges, mounts, bars, etc. There are lots of spare engine parts in storage as well as brand new OEM gaskets. In addition we will have support from Beat the Heat and all of their sponsors. Vince can handle all the chassis construction and I am trying to get some suspension dynamics software. I've got an engine analyser program that we can do rough engine build-up tests on. I know people at a couple of toyota dealerships: Broadway toyota and Gresham toyota.

I'm sure sooner or later Dylan will call a shop meeting so we can get this project rolling.

What is the time span for this project? I have some solid contacts in the autobody business (owners and managers), if the shell of the ex sethmobile is used, also a good idea for paint...when it comes to that stage. If a leader emasses soon enough I will give them my black book. I wont be back to Oregon til mid september. I can help keep organized maybe? micro manage?

The people from Beat the Heat want the car for next summer, but I'd really like to see a rolling test-bed by this fall. If nothing else, I'd like to get all of the chassis fabrication done, and get a driveable setup that we can tune, tweak, and make faster as needed. I'm not sure what all the BTH people want in terms of body - I can call and ask them. From what it sounded like, since the car is already black they just want use to get it straight and drivable, and they'll paint the doors and roof white, handle the decals, names, and whatever, and put a light bar on it. It's great to know that you've got some contacts should we need them though. We're gonna have to re-fab some of the front, but I think we can build it bigger, better, and stronger. I know it's extra work, but we might even want to consider building a custom-ish front end for it. Fiberglass is nice and easy to mold.

Chris, you still got that NRHA rule book? We are gonna need that.

The donor car is a 93, with 91 rear suspension. It's already partially gutted from SethW's swap. It does not have a front end: no headlights, no bumper, no bumper cover, etc.

I have some spare 1.5 X 1.20 wall tubing for making bumpers.

Have a stock 5sfe crank here that we can mic. to test specs. I will start gathering specs for all useable engines so we can test them on engine analyser. Think we should do the build on paper and test them first. Have a set of 5s and 3s cams in case we want to try a custom grind. There are some 7mge injectors on the shelf. Have a couple of 5sfe ecu's, steve may have a 3sgte ecu. Or we might go Megasquirt for a stand alone. Think Chris has a bunch of new parts for custom fuel system we didnt use.

I think the way to go would be the stroker motor (5s bottom, 3s head). Its a proven motor. Only problem with that would be ECU, Is there a way without going stand alone? I got a USDM 3s ecu I can throw in. There is all kinds parts lying around to get a complete hybrid motor. Since the car wont actually be out on the track racing all the local ricers til next year, it looks like I wil be able to be a part of whats going on once I return. Hope all is well guys, enjoy medford.

I think the biggest thing is going to have people pony up and actually commit themselfs to working on this as a group effort and not that of a few individuals. If people are willing to join the build they need to understand that they will need to lend a hand where ever possible/what ever way possible and be their more than once or twice a month. I'm still a little hesitant about donating my car to a bunch of cops but on the other hand I'd like to see zai's business get some exposure and I'd like to make use of my car. I dont want to have this as a thing of me and zai finishing this up before next year so we dont look like a bunch of *******s.

Right now the biggest thing is going to be getting all of the shop projects out of the shop so we can really start going on this. I'd like to see us start up on this soon after the medford event.

Unfortunately for me its a stretch for me to get to the shop more then a couple of weekends a month since I live in corvallis and my parents dont live in gresham anymore, granted all my friends do, plus the price of gas. I think a key to success would be organization, which I think most of the projects have shown we could all be a lil more organized. I think a solid schedule would really help out, as to where and what needs to be done by which points of the build, going along a calendar of course. I would really like to see Zai's name out there on every car and people to say, ohh thats a Moua Bro's car. With whats going on with the advancement of the fabrication skills of the shop I am sure thats not too far fetched. I think a leader just needs to step up and start managing and have a written goals sheet.

Damn, I just keep getting smacked around here... I already volunteered to manage the project. I have contact information for the Beat the Heat people, and need to get contact information for people involved in our side of the project, hence why I asked for a roll call, and for people to put down some sort of contact information. That way, when we get some of the othe projects cleared out, and we can start on the BTH car, I will be able to call everyone and say, "Hey, this Saturday is a build day - here is what we are going to be doing - be there!"

Yeah....you go Dylan! Haha. Until the rest of the group can get organised I am continueing to build the project on paper.

Steve and I are still working on specs. 5sfe crank/5sfe block, rod journals are 4 mm larger than 3sgte rod big ends. On paper, that gives us a good 2 mm for an offset ground crank if we go with 3sgte rods. Tossing the idea around of having Roy at Paolo's o-ring the deck for boost. There are two decent sized intercoolers in storage. I've disassembled the GE head and Steve checked clearances to see if we could swap in 3sgte parts. It currently doesnt look viable unless we do some serious grinding for lobe clearances, we will be testing that theory. I've got a test design for an intake manifold that i'd like to try given the time.

Leng was by last night, he says he can make it once or twice a week.

Art says he probably will be running their current car tomorrow evening. We may take a break and go watch/hang out. Everyone is welcome to go hang out, prob meet at the shop first.

We do have a phone list at the shop for the regular workshop guys.

Went down and watched Art run their camaro last saturday. He was very dissappointed in the car, we were too. I think it's best time was 13.4 , so they are going to do some " upgrading ". Art wants to make it into the low 12's or high 11's. They are trying to raise the bar before we can get our car built, haha.

Chris, Steve, and I pretty much have the engine configuration figured out on paper. It's looking like we are going to need outside help with some of the machine work and parts. I've already talked to Art and Jay about having parts machined and gettin new parts. Soon as one of the engine stands is free we will start pieceing the engine together. I've started the build log, we are making good progress with the details. The "test" engine is partially assembled in engine analyser and so far looks pretty decent. Vince and I are taking measurements and looking over my car to determine what kinds of weight savings we can improve on. I'm thinking once we have the engine assy. together, then we will start on the chassis.

I saw them running this saturday while you were down in Medford, and they were consistently running in the 15's. Pretty week considering it is gutted, caged, and they advertise it as 350whp.

Stock hondas with an intake and exhaust are outrunning this thing considerably. They need to have a fast car out there if they are going to promote anything for the cause they are trying to. They want to promote the excitement of the track instead of the street, and a car that slow doesn't do it, even if it does have flashy lights. The stock interceptors are quicker. (AND more fun to run from! HEHE! )

They are very dissappointed in how they ran last weekend. Art says they have a new engine on the way that should put them in the low 12's. They also have a new transmission to go with it. Looks like we got them motivated, haha.

15's... I still ran a13sec qtr mile.. after I wheelied off the line... set the bike down hard enough to kill the engine... restarted the bike and ran my run...

15 sec is FOREVER in drag racing. . . maybe unless you're drag racing like barstools or something.

or 1/8th miling low CC quads...
