    1993 MR2 V6 emissions testing.

I have to smog my car in May of 2013. The 5sfe that's stock in the car, sounds like it's on its way out. Overall, the car has been neglected by the original owner. I want to do a 3vzfe swap into it this summer, but I fear that the car won't pass Oregon smog with that engine. Further more, by state law that engine swap is illegal. In Oregon, you can only swap in the same make of an engine as the car and could only swap a motor that was an option to the model. So I can only swap in a Toyota motor into a Toyota chassis and the engine has to be a factory option of that chassis, so my only legal options are a USDM 3sgte or 5sfe. I don't want a 3sgte due to cost and the 5sfe lacks fun to me. So, those who live in Portland with v6's in their twos did you pass emission testings with the 3vzfe with no one the wiser?

I'm probably going with a jdm motor which lacks an egr system, I plan on putting on a egr to smog one last time (I only do it one more time, then the car is 21 years old and the car won't need to be smogged anymore in the Rogue Valley.) What does it take to fit on an egr onto a jdm engine? Does it involve drilling? Can I just buy a usdm intake with the egr system and install and I'm good to go?

TIA for answering my lame questions

i thought engine swaps were legal as long as the engine is from the same year or newer and retained its emission equipment. didnt seth pass with his v6?
but i dont have to worry about emissions here in salem so what do i know.

That's what I thought too. But I cam across some 4x4 forum threads, regarding Oregon has changed their engine swap rules. This was in 2008, I believe or it could of been order stating. That an engine can only be swapped in if it's the same make of the car and it's an factory engine option to the model of the car.

I'm assuming you're refering to Seth_W, if so... I hope he chimes in and can give me the low down. Since my car is a 93, I wonder if I can just put in a 92 3vzfe without the state knowing. I don't think they changed the engine within one year (I'm going off the camry).

I passed no problems, even supercharged. The exhaust system was 2 independent exhausts with 2 cats so no issues on testing a 3 cylinder. All they did was hook up a sniffer and call it good. I just got my 2nd MR2 from a guy in medford (jim) and he passed with no EGR and a straight pipe on his/mine. In 12 years of total they only popped the hood on mine once and all they found was a battery

I think jim has his V6 sold or something but I have my old 1mz/3mz setup eventually up for grabs. My being somewhat biased would go for that over the VZ. I do have a good chunk of parts and what not if you go that route.

That's good to hear. I'll most likely pass (I assume) with a egr system and since I'm most likely will try to use the n/a exhaust with the camry y pipe with one cat welded after the two pipes of the y merge into one. I would like to go to 3mzfe, but this will be my first swap and I would like to keep it simple as possible. Your 1mz/3mz setup you have is it a plug n play affair?

Jim? I don't think I've met him. I only know one local member (I haven't met him in person.) The guy I know of has a white 2nd gen turbo with greddy side skirts, greddy lip (maybe) and 5zigen wheels. I was hoping to be the first v6 mr2 in Medford, but I guess I'm little late on that.

best place would be outside of medford or any idea where you dont have to do any testing.
