any TX based MR2 specialist shops

looking for Houston area - but Austin and/or DFW will work in a pinch

just got a compression test back on my red '91 NA

likely valve/head related based on other symptoms, but just don't have time or much of a place to mess with it here...

looking at a specialist shop that will do everything right first and foremost, but is also priced more inline with what it actually takes time-wise to work on these cars (ie not going to charge me 24-30hrs for head & timing belt :-| )

thanks in advance!!

They are far from being my favorite MR2 place, plus I think their prices are too high, but ATS Racing is in Denton, Texas, which looks like it's about 20 miles from Dallas-Fort Worth (I'm a KO Racing nut, but then I live 10 minutes from KO).

Sorry I can't be of more help

Hi Ken,

ATS is in Dallas - they can probably give you an accurate price estimate since they specialize in MR2s.

I live in Austin, and my mechanic of 7 years (for all my cars) is not an MR2 specialist, but he has done a lot of work on my MR2 (dropped the engine, replaced all seals, gaskets, timing belt, engine harness, and later put in a new CT20b turbo), so he's somewhat familiar with the MR2 setup. It's actually he and his son who do the work. They're definitely good mechanics, they're honest, and they are very fair for pricing -- to a fault. For example, once they charged me 6 hours labor for a job that took them 10 hours, because he "could have done it in 6 hours if I had to do it again". The place is Century Automotive, 512-467-1255 - Joe and Travis. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I don't think they've done any head work on an MR2, for what it's worth. They do head work on other cars all the time. You have a 5SFE right? That's a more common engine, so maybe they've done work on that before (in some other Toyota).
