Shim under/Shimless buckets for MZ/VZ possible?

    Lifter, Valve
    - 13751-74040 (under bucket)
    - Applications: 5SFNE

    - 13751-74020 (over bucket)
    - Applications: 4A/7AFE, 3S/5SFE (93+), 2JZGE/GTE, 1MZFE (excl. VVT-i), 3VZ/5VZFE, 2RZ/3RZFE, 2TZFE/FZE

    Shim
    - 13753-22xxx (depends on size)
    - Applications: 5SFNE, 1/2/3UZFE

The part numbers between the two lifters are surprisingly close, and that usually means a revision of a similar part. I could test one on my 93+ 5SFE head or take my valve covers off and try on my 1MZ.

    They're $12 a piece at Partznet x 24 = $288 plus shims.

Toyota has 3 different valvetrain setups

Small Bucket - Used in Pre 93 engines I4 and V6

Medium Bucket - Used in all Post 93 engines for I4's and V6's (depending on engine some start using the larger buckets in 91 (example the 3s-gte)

    Large Bucket - Only found on the 3.0L 3vz-E 4runner v6

The medium bucket engines will all interchange as well as the small bucket ones.

You can find shimless buckets for the v6's from the I4 1zz-ge engine. They are the same ones that the 3s-gte guys use.

The shimless buckets are nice. Which engines have automatic valve lash adjustment?

The same shimless buckets are used on the 1ZZ, 2AZ, 1GR, and probably other newer engines.

    Lifter, Valve
    13751-46030, size dependent (5.06mm)

The 1GR uses the same shimless buckets as the ZZ and AZ. Guess I wasn't paying attention to the part numbers in my EPC.

How come this isn't stickied somewhere? I feel much more educated now.

Weasy, the 1GR still uses shimless buckets with conventional cams. It's the only GR to do so. The Toyota EPC illustrations confirm it. Perhaps in the future, Toyota will redesign the heads to mimic the other GRs (roller rockers, unique, rounded concave cam lobes for increased valve lift, and dual VVT-i) for a good performance gain to extend the life of the engine.

I had a feeling they still did.
I have yet to do some full out research on those engines. I am mastering the VZ/MZ right now

Weasy, is this correct that shimless buckets from the 1zz-ge engine do not work with your cams?

they will for you! If you buy the valves that match the cam material removal then you are back to stock levels

Happy to wait for a job done properly

I might just get the bottom end built first then, and then have the headwork done a month or so later ... we'll see how timescales go!
