the 5vz has the a/c sitting on the opposite side of the engine block compared to the transversal 3vz and mzs. which means its sitting in the path of the axles

well that will do it! i thought the 3s and other fwd v6 s were on the fire wall side and 5vz was on trunk side, is that incorrect?

Cool 3VZ Vs 5VZ

well, after reading up and doing a lot of research, I've finally decided to go for the 5VZ, at just shy of £6,000 inc shipping, The engine will be supplied fully rebuilt with a list of upgrades as long as my arm, pushing between a guaranteed 600-700 RW bhp, (inc a Rotex SC)

I have Paul Woods based in County Durham (NEast UK) to carry out the work, Engine to be built and supplied by Sea2Sky in the USA, at this price, Pauls labour is not covered. The car will be going in for the work in 5-6 months.

Should be a bit of a beast. My father works as a paint designer, doesnt sound exciting, but he only works with flip paints, chromes, metaflake and temperature reactive paints. So he is going to be designing / providing me with a custom colour, hopefully find a genuine TRD kit to finish it of - so if anyone knows of where I can get one - let me know

Anyways - as to the debate, if you want driveability, with a little bit of a conservative drive left - go for the 3VZ - if you just want something brutal for the drag strip and a few weekend drives, go for the 5VZ, either way, both are excellent setups in the MR2 and neither should be knocked.

I agree 5VZ's are so hardy. You can't kill them. I have run mine like a beast since last year. Bad AFR's, big air bubbles in my cooling system, overheated so badly. None of it has hurt it yet. That , my friends, is a tough motor!

Sorry, Paul told me that sea2sky was in the USA!!! guess it was easier than saying Canada. (somehow or other)

anyway, fetting funds together to pay up front, that way I can have an allowance for any unforseen costs.

It needs to be done. hopefully sooner rather than later, PS these forums are amzing - so much help and advice - Thanks guys

heh its alright man i took no offense to it Building these motors can be tough to estimate costs due to the fact there can be different problems that vary motor to motor. For example some engines that i get in are perfect and have always been run with synthetic, while others are treated like crud and i need to have things like the valve guides replaced which ups the cost. The motor i sourced for you however is in very good shape, i came across this one not to long ago and picked it up as a spare core.

hey after reading this I think that I will be doing a 3vz in my swap this spring...I'm not trying to make huge power but I do want my 2 to run as fast as it looks...All though the 1mz is sounding like a good way to go also....great more research....

Slowly working on moving from a member of the V6 engine stand club into the V6 car club. =-) 5VZ all the way. 400-450whp or so is the goal. Street mod autoX = smaller turbo for faster response.

Going to have to vote 3VZ on this one, just because the availability in Norway is lackluster of both engines, but at least i know where i can get a 3VZ, if they still have it.

there's a half dozen 3vz camry's on toyotanation that run the bottle no ems (anywhere between 75 and a 200 wet shots, one 125 dry shot no ems) three on there in the last year running 125 - ya about 350 at the end of the day, but close enough...

the obd-I of teh 3vz-fe would easily let someone get away with sub $300 worth of fuel mods to make 450bhp'ish. no aftermarket management required. it wouldn't run as well a car with another grand dropped into EMS solutions. the point is that it could be made to run perfectly acceptably & safely until around there.
HP fuel pump $100
12:1 fmu $100
fuel filter $15
new plugs $12
the differance is that the obd-II cars will run rich enough to foul the plugs & go lean under boost over time, where the older engine will simply run rich under boost until your fuel pump chokes. on a 12:1 FMU you won't see a wideband gauge do anything but bottom out at a 10:1 A/F ratio until around 350bhp even in the high par tof the middle rpm ranges.
we have yet to discuss starting off with a mild injector swap that the ECU will tune itself out during closed loop once warm yet!
tehehehehehe nor have we said you *probably* wouldn't need to touch the distributor for a measily old 350bhp since they're so retarded from the factory. we all just do it for peace of mind really...
or water/alcohol injection lol

nor have we discussed replacing the stock fpr completely with a $200 fmu that has adjustable base pressure, and adjustable rise VS manifold pressure. now you're opening the door to running relatively large injectors acceptably in closed loop without EMS.
<- still not discussed mild afm tuning to help those injectors life on the street either.

3vz-fe motto = get there cheaper, with more faster; if you're not opposed to applying FI.
just reviewing this thread and wondered if you could provide links to these 3vzfe's that are pushing 300hp+ that you talk about...? I'm very interested in seeing their results and what they used in their camrys.

thanks

I know the 5VZ is not that good in the 4runner or tacoma around 17MPG IIRC.... My 4.0L in my 05 4Runner gets better than that

With my 5vz running pig rich with no tune at all, I'm getting about 16mpg. That is a combo highway and city mileage. AND it is with me DRIVING the car, not poking along. I expect to get to around 30, if I tune for mileage.
