Newb V6 Swap
i am looking to do a V6 swap in my N/A 93 5spd...problem is i have no idea where to start i have been talking to oteck (which he has helped me out a TON) but i still get lost and i want to learn all i can so please help it would be much appreciated. I am looking for something newer and my goals are to be 350 hp when i am done but i want to just start with the engine and tranny first and get all the electrical bugs out first so i have a strong start. i was looking at the 3MZ-FE and the 1Mz-FE i want to supercharge it later down the road so i was looking at the E153 transmission to handle the supercharger when i put it in. Also with the 1Mz-Fe the rods and pistons will need to be replaced but what about the 3Mz-Fe. I pretty much need a parts list and all the info you know to help me out. i will have about $4200 to start the project (and hopefully get everything done with that including some labor)
Thanks in advance for you help it is greatly appreciated!! |

$4200 is nowhere near enough money if you aren't doing all the work by yourself and don't already own all the tools you'll need.
Also: Why the arbitrary horsepower goal? Get a 3SGTE. You'll have 350hp a lot sooner and easier. V6 swaps aren't about horsepower, they're about torque and powerband. A custom forced-induction setup on a V6 swap will require an EMS as well as the skill/knowledge to tune it, never mind all the custom fabrication it will require. My best advice to you is to keep it simple. ![]() |

275-300rwhp = 1MZ + SC + engine management OR 2GR + Gouky's custom headers & other goodies.
Price? About $10k - $12k if you buy all the parts and pay someone to do it (right). About half that if you can do all the work. Do you want a dragster or track day car or what? |

From my experience project car and daily driver rarely mix well. Also, projects ALWAYS take longer than they should and cost more than you think they will. Do it right once. You’ll end up saving money. Ask me how I know…
Get your part’s list together and start pricing things out. Prices vary a lot and you may or may not find some good deals. You said you are interested in a track car, depending on what class you are thinking about running the stock 4 cylinder N/A’s are probably more competitive within their classing than turbo’s or swapped V6’s. Have you done much with your suspension yet? That made a huge difference in the fun to drive factor for me, plus, in reality my stockish N/A 5SFE is plenty fast to get me into more than enough trouble. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve been fiddling with the engine to eek a bit more power out it, and if I own my MR2 long enough I will probably end up putting a V6 in at some point; but that will be once I feel the car is limited by it’s powerband and not something else (like my driving skill’s). Guess I’m trying to say focus on driving, having a car you’re constantly working on is not much fun. In related news there’s an autocross in Blaine this weekend, I can’t make it due mostly to Easter plans. Here’s the details: Chuckanut Sports Car Club Autocross Most of the people there are awesome and enjoy helping a novice out, I’d encourage you to attend if you can. |

When i said track car that is the wrong term i am just looking for a fun car i can go to the track and just race the clock for fun you know? and bring it to the drag strip like once a year cause straight lines are boring with such a great handling car Ya i heard about that Autocross but i dont think i will be able to make it due to easter plans too. We still need to get some other MR2 guys together and just BS about how cool MR2's are cause i talked to you about it a while back and we never did lol and if you still want to i am usually free on the weekends |
