Question new 3vz v6 owner - needs some advice

just traded my n/a for a v6 hardtop which im sure some people have seen around the sale boards. my name on the 'other' boards is race4eva and it looks like there is more info for v6's on the mr2board

im friends with bryan h and i think i meet jim from sb last year at the lone pine time trials. if that was you in the hertz mustang i rode that one fast lap with you?

i have been autoxing my former e stock 91 car for over 1 year and wanted more fun and power

looking to sort the car for daily / autox / and some track time at streets of willow

i autoxed the car 3 shakedown laps this past weekend and experienced some blue smoke in the exhaust around sweepers .. please note that the oil level was accidentally at least 1 quart overfilled

im concerned with oil starvation and oil overflow during high G turns on race tires wondering if i need

1. a baffled oil pan
2. oil catch can for the top valve cover for the hose which vents into the intake
3. multiple catch cans or a vents in the passenger side of one or both valve covers
4. should run 20-50 fully synthetic , or any specific oil?

i have a chance to purchase a manual ecu for $100

1. will it help my hesitation which sometimes happens when i run constant 80mph+
2. should i bother if the ecu not from cali. ? ( i plan on going to a ref in the future)
3 will this help me in any other area?
4. is it plug and play
5. it wont effect my bumped timing i assume?

ok its really not 9 questions in my first post lol its two questions which have multiple angles

anyways hoping for a few answers and ideas and your help will be appreciated

here is the second autox run if you want to check it out

jeff

Great vid. Man I sure envy you guys. Maybe someday my POS will make it to the track, hah. Is your friend Bryan the one that goes to the Meford MR2 meet? If so I've met him, and he's met my car, lol. Sounds like you are enjoying the car.

The 3vz pan is deep and the pickup sits really close to the bottom, if you are looking for some type of gain then you could fab a kicked out sump with trap doors to better utilize a windage tray instead of the stock piece. Oil catch cans are always a good idea to prevent oil spray into the intake. I run amsoil synthetic, 10-30 in the 3vz and 5-30 in the 5vz. If you are still using the stock maf for the 3vz it could be the cause of your hesitation.

My Google Map

Hi Jeff,
Yep, that was Bryan and me in the rent-a-racer at Lone Pine last year. I'll have my 91 hardtop V6 out there this year. Two V6 MR2s, one red, one yellow! Should be fun.

The blue smoke was almost certainly oil going through the breather into the intake. On RH turns, I suppose? A catch can should fix that. I'll rig something up on my car after I get the referee (re)inspection done. I failed first time due to the piping diameter in my Y-pipe.

I'd stick with synthetic in whatever weight Toyota specs for the 3VZ, unless you hear otherwise from someone on here with specific knowledge that heavier weight is better.

For the ECU, it shouldn't matter. I've been through the process twice now, and they didn't look at the ECU either time. Just make sure the check engine light is hooked up, and the EGR is working correctly.

Hey Jeff! Sorry I couldn't stick around to watch your runs. Wished I did, so I could've had a ride in your v6!

Jim you have a n/a 1mz if i recall with lsd?

yes two v6s at lone pine ...nice
mine needs some work before the event but should be decent

im part of the new wave of v6 owners who didnt do the build themselves

thinking i should snag the manual ecu... i heard i will need to re-adjust the timing and air flow meter as the maps are a little different. probably on a dyno

with the manual ecu benefit me any other way besides cleaning up issues over 80mph

im wondering if it has a better tune?
more responsive ..etc??

davis i only did three runs anyway cuz of some smoke.. see you at the free Z club event?
Jim you should come down for test n tune !

thanks

^^^ Pretty much the reason I can't stand autocrossing. Too easy to get lost and I don't have the memory for it, course-walking or not :/

I'm fine on an actual track though!
