6g72 tt in an mr2?
I heard someone mention that they were going to try it one day but i have yet to hear anything about it. Now im very aware this is a mitsubishi engine and the reasons for me wanting to pick it is that most v6 toyota engines werent made for turbos. For those who dont know the 6g72 comes out of the 3000gt/stealth and if you get the twin turbo vr4 version your looking at 320 hp stock. Now ive heard rumors of easy detonation but i plan on fixing up the internals anyway so i dont care about stock engine problems. So whats the downside to having this engine? From what i see its fairly cheep to buy...is there a big weight difference between this and the 1mzfe or maybe any space problems in the bay?

Have you seen inside the engine bay of a 300gt? your hard pressed to find a spot in there you can reach your hand into. I would say you would have space issues.
Are you keeping the twin turbo/intercooler setup? What trans would you use?Or are you going to try and keep the AWD/AWS? |

its gonna be a very difficult swap if it is even possible. I don't see how you would be able to use the AWD tranny out of the 3000gt or how it would fit cause that motor is really big.

You might fit the engine itself, but all the piping and everthig else would be a strech. this would be like the 2jz question kind of. Yeah you could. But by the time you cut the crap out of it and throw soooo much $$$ into it, it really isnt an mr2 anymore. There are easier ways to hit 320 hp, and way cheaper.
Now I am not saying I wouldnt want the guys autograph that pulled this off. This setup, if one could make it work, would be the friggin awsome!! |

The 6G72 uses full DOHC wide included valve angle heads like the G series Toyota/Yamaha motors. This will make it more difficult to fit because the packaging of the engine is not as compact as a normal Toyota V6. So, you're looking at 2 wide cylinder heads with 2 cam gears on each head, as opposed to the Toyota V6s' that use 1 cam gear per head with an included scissor gear system to drive the cam not connected to the cam gear/timing belt. The front bank of the 1MZ is already too close to the firewall at the front of the engine compartment, making it difficult to check the oil using the dipstick. I can just imagine if the heads were wider. So, where do you put the two turbos without creating a dangerous fire risk?
This engine also wasn't designed for a transverse setup, so the manifolds and engine mounts will be in positions made for a FR/RWD-based AWD, longitudinal setup. That also means that the Mitsubishi engineers didn't have to take the length of the engine from the clutch/flywheel to the crank pulley into account for a space compromised transverse mounting. If the engine is longer than the Toyota engines, you'll have to find a compact transaxle that can take its power. And there aren't many of those. You'll then have to work on adapting a shifter mechanism to work with the MR2's rear shift cables that want to connect to the front of the transaxle, not the rear of it. All in all, it'll be expensive. |

![]() What were they thinking?! It's just like the other 6G engines. WTF? You'd think Mitsubishi would actually go the real GT route and mount it proper. Even Audi does that with the AWD RS4. ![]() The heads are still wider than the 3VZ/1MZ/5VZ. Last edited by Jason.MZW20; 05-04-2009 at 06:33 PM.. |
