Nothing wrong with going under the crossmember.. My y-pipe merges together just under it. However, it does hug the crossmember pretty tight. 2.0"--> 2.5" after the merge and into the cat, then into the stock turbo muffler (I have an HKS Sport waiting to be installed). It's about as smooth as you can get, I think..

Clearance: You can barely see the y-pipe.. it's probably not quite an inch lower than the muffler, and since it's directly between the rear wheels, it's in a good place..

Exhaust: Hurr, pretty It's louder than I was expecting.. I guess the performance-oriented y-pipe makes a huge difference. That, and I only have the main cat in the system.. no OEM pre-cats (usuing OEM non-cat manifolds). Honestly, I wish the pre-cat manifold would have fit, because I'd prefer a cleaner-running car as well as the more muffled sound..

Looks great Conor, I like that Y pipe setup!

I haven't had any scraping problems with even my 3" under-crossmember setup.... so you'll be way golden.

Well, it's on jackstands there... so that's maximum droop of the trailing arm. Unless he got on 2 wheels, it would never be that close driving.

Newbiewan put a '93 rear suspension on AFTER he made his exhaust.

Under heavy load, the exhaust would bounce off of the tierod. This triggered the knock sensor, making the engine forget it had any kind of HP. (SC'd, about 325 HP at the crank.)

Gimp-o's got it right.. the tie rod is close, but not touching the y-pipe in that photo. I have not noticed any y-pipe / crossmember contact during driving so far. It's hugging it tightly, but definitely not going anywhere.

No problems with ground clearance either. the y-pipe crosses under the crossmember, which is centered between the rear wheels, so it'd have to be a very strange and horribly uneven road surface to get it to scrape (or I'd have to drive head-on over a big speed bump, haha).

Hi Guys! Just bout myself a 1990 N/A and am already wanting to tinker. Not meaning to hijack, but what is a resonable price to pay for having a standard exhaust exhaust modified for the V6? I'm really keen to give all this a shot. I've never done a engine swap to a different type engine before, but I'm sure I'd be ok. I'm trying to price everything up.

For those that have the under-crossmember downpipes, what tire size do you run in the rear? has the car been lowered? I had my downpipe configured with a 2.5" flexpipe under the cross-member and scraped one on a dip on the freeway. I am lowered on H&R springs all around and running 205/55-16 in the rear. I've since taken the downpipe apart and reconfigured it to go over the cross member. I also got the added benefit of it being equal lenght from the manifolds now.

245/40/17 on the back here, lowered slightly ... but just barely. On hard dips I've heard it scrape now/then... but VERY rarely.

Anyone know how much the Vee angle changes the exhaust harmonics? I was listening to the NSX videos, and I know the C32B uses a 90 degree Vee angle like a V8, but our MZ/VZ engines are compact 60 degree angles. The one thing I can think of is a wider intake tract between the two heads, which can possibly change exhaust sound.

I think theres a ton of factors, and maybe the V is one of them. Valvetrain, port design and compression and many other things are for sure factors.

Ever hear a GM or Ford 90* V6? Sound like crap.

Haha, those are the worst sounding motors ever. But they basically just took 2 cylinders off of a V8 and made a V6 ... a pushrod V6 at that. That's a no-no.

My bad. I knew the wheels were the same width from 91 to 93, but didn't know they increased the tire sizes.

Quote:
The stock wheels on the 91/92 models were 14" x 6" fronts and 14" x 7" rears, with a 45mm offset. Tires sizes were 195/60 front and 205/60 rear. Tires were V rated on Turbo models and H rated on non-turbo models. On the 1993+ models wheels were enlarged to 15" x 6" front and 15" x 7" rear, again with a 45mm offset. Tires were 195/55 front and 225/50 rear.

I'm sure this thread will help even the 4cyl turbo and NA guys trying to keep a quiet, stock looking, yet free flowing exhaust setup. At least it will definately help me.

How restrictive is the stock turbo muffler? Has anyone measured the diameter of piping at the inlet of the muffler?

Basically, I want to be running a bigger exhaust, but want it to look very close to stock. I dont like any of the exhausts currently on the market. I plan on having an exhaust completely fabbed up. I need a muffler that looks similar to the stock one, and tips from another car. Not sure what tips at this point, but something OEM and bead rolled, i.e. Acura TL, Porsche 911, G35, etc. I havent really figured what shape tip I want to go with yet, but thats the last piece of the puzzle.

Would prefer the exhaust to be 2.75" minimum (3" max) diameter, quiet (slightly louder than stock MR2 T), and looks very close to stock with the exception of the tips.

Understood, and sorry about the mistake I made. Lets get back to the topic! hehe

So, does anyone who is running the stock v6 "y pipe" into the stock turbo "b pipe" and cat, have any pics of how they line up? Did you put flanges, weld it together?

I haven't even begun my V6 project, but I do have a v6 y pipe, turbo b pipe with cat, and turbo muffler waiting for it. Hopefully the motor I buy comes with the manifolds since I didn't save that from the one I had...

I saw Brian's video and I have to say I think the sound is perfect, and besides possibly altering or replacing the stock v6 y pipe due to its lovely merge, I don't think I will do anything different, since it seems headers make it sound worse.
