Like the title says. i picked up a na auto mr2 about two months ago. When i bought the car the previous owner had allready replaced the timing belt but it was off a tooth so i was able to bring the price down, "due to the time it would take to fix the belt". It took me 45 minutes and had it running good. i drove it around the block and parked it behind my house to swap the tranny. That's where its been parked for about a month now. The tranny swap ended up turning into a 5 speed 1mzfe swap. I went to the yardto pic up some parts and found an wrecked avalon with a really clean 1mzfe. for the last month i've been collecting parts. I know a lot of people just drop the engine in, but i wanted to freshen it up before install. when i took it apart the crosshatch pattern in the cylinders was still looking great. I installed new piston rings, all new seals and the newer style mls head gaskets. I also have two different wiring harnesses and don't know which to use. I'm debating wether to wire the six coils into the 99 camry harnes and igniter and run wasted spark. I was going to split the signal from the igniter to go to two cylinders instead of one, or should i just go with the three coil and wire setup.
Anyways the engine should be in next week. Now i'm just flipping through tons of wiring diagrams. Should have it running in about a month. I don't want to be in the engine stand club too long. By the way i also have turbo parts laying around and am planning to run about 6 to 8 lbs or boost, but that's after running it na for a while. I am aware of the risk of boosting a 1mzfe, and am planning on upgrading pistons and rods later on I will post pics soon. |

Sounds great. The 6 cop looks better in my opinion and as long as you have the ecu for it, use it. My 1mz had 134k on it when i got it, when I started to open it up it had a new timing belt, spark plugs and a fresh oil change so I decided to run it as is. I have been beating the snot out of it and it just keeps on going. I had planned on supercharging it this summer but it is so much fun to drive i don't want to be without it. I think i'll buy another car and motor for supercharging. Which trans are you using?

if you use the 6 COP set-up... each individual coil has its own ignitor intigrated... each ignitor gets its signal to fire (IGt) from the ECM, and each sends a part of the common IGf signal to the ECM and tach as confirmation.
You need to use the coils that match the ECM... whichever one you use... |

1mzfe swap
the coils i would be using are not the newer, four wire. those have the igniter integrated into it. i would be using the two wire coils, with seperate igniter. i was thinking of splitting the signal between two cylinders. i'll probably just get it running on the three coil set up and experiment later. i have a few igniters to play with. just for example, i would be splitting the signal wire from the igniter to the coil and feed two coils. i just don't know if the signal would be strong enough for two coils. i'll see if i could draw up a schematic for what i'm trying to describe.
by the way i'm using the stock na 5spd tranny. |

you know that a waste spark ignition coil won't work on its own without a ground path for the opposite cylinder.

I don't think the mounts will work correctly. If you wanted to do an auto V6 your best bet would be using the MR2 auto. I would just do a manual conversion though...

1mz swap
about the ingnition coil ground i really want to post pics and schematic, i just havent had the time. Tony, as soon as i get the engine in and running we can meet up. unless you want to come down and help me with the install. lol i got the engine together finally and want to start the install this week coming up. i;m debating wether to make a passenger side mound or go with a left and right engine mount set up. I also just got a ct26 that i want to rebuild and install over the winter, but i put that to the side until i get it running properly. Don't want to get ahead of miself. How's the scene in lancaster. A bunch of people dont have their cars out yet around here yet. from my understanding their cars are gonna be beasts. i sold my celica gts to a girl in lancaster. i really miss the car, but i'm sure a v6 mr2 will make it all better.

1mz update
well i finally mated my tranny with the engine. and the engine is sitting under the engine bay ready to be lifted into place. i did run into a lil problem, the drivers side tranny mount is different than the automatic mount, so now i have to find one. hopefully the engine will be in this week and wired n running soon after. i also have to run clutch lines as well. As far as turbo goes, i found a company about an hour (lebanon PA) away to rebuild and uprade my ct26. the companies name is blouch turbo.

1mz swap
well the engine is finally in, but i havent been able to work on it much in the last few weeks. i installed the wire harness after removing all the wires that i wouldnt be using. hopefully this weekend ill be wiring it up and running. wiring has been such a headache. it's not that difficult and i have access to the manuals, but with the limited time i just don't want to screw it up. figured how to post pics but i'm at work right now and don't have the camera on me

finally running
I finally got some decent time to work on the mr2 over the weekend, and like the title says it's running. It started right up, and hopefully over the week i'll weld the exhaust up and get it on the road by friday. I haven't gone to any car meets all summer waiting to finish this swap and i really want to make it for friday's. It sounds really good and i was really surprised that it started on the first try, i could have sworn that i would have had some wire crossed or something and i am sure i'll run into something but it feels really good to have gotten to this point.
Between all the helpfull wiring information and having acces to factory wiring manuals at work wiring wasn't really all that hard. It was just time consuming with all the tracing and double n triple checking. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i thought i had better pics of the engine bay, i guess i'll have to download them later. better pics coming
I will be taking more pics of the engine bay as it is now and of the exhaust soon. The exhaust i'm using is off an audi s4. I just have to find the right bends to run the exhaust over the subrame. Are there any people running the exhaust under the subframe? Any suggestions would be great. This exhaust set up will be temporary, as i plan to turbo the car over the winter.

I've seen people run the exhaust under the crossmember but it looks like it'd be pretty easy to dent. I'd just run it over the crossmemeber. Just use the stock tube as a shape template...

some pics
finally got around to cleaning the engine bay up. here's a few pics. have to roll on stock wheels for the time being. want to get rota p45 17x8 up front and p45r 17x9 in the rear. i moved the fuse panel to the trunk to make room for turbo stuffff. sorry for the picture quality, their phone pics. my winter project is to set up an aem fic and running a ct26, hopefully for the winter. runs good for now i want to install a new fuel pump. after the turbo i'll plan on either changing gears or goin with a different tranny.
