Larger oil filter for V6s

I've been using a larger than stock oil filter on my Tacoma's 1GR for quite some time now (since my first oil change at 2000 miles). I mean, afterall, it can't hurt to have more filtered oil available for the engine to use, right?

I recently fitted the same filter on my 1MZ, and though it's quite large, the gasket area fits perfectly just like on my 1GR. It's kind of like how the 3S and 5S have different filters, the 3S having more volume but interchangable with the 5S.

Since I use PureONE filters, the number is PL14670.

The newer ones are yellow with a grippier surface area for easier removal and installation.

Not too sure about Purolator Pure One filters, but sometimes you might be better off just using a smaller OEM piece that does a better job of filtering. Just some food for thought

In most oil analyses I've seen with actual empirical data, the PureONE and Mobil 1 filters are the best on the market, and Frams (regular) are one of the worst. The OEM Toyota filter is good, but it's not as good as those two.

Purolator makes the Toyota-spec oil filters. I'm not sure if they've switched suppliers since, but that was the last supplier for Toyota.

Glad to see you've done your research

If I remember right, there's two types of filters; the type you'd typically buy from your local parts guy (90915-YZZ##) and the Denso filters from Japan. I guess the YZZ ones are probably the Purolator filters?

Is there a relief valve in those, or a check valve to keep oil in the filter when inverted, that might not be the same?

Many of the PureONE filters use a silicone anti-drainback valve and a bypass/relief valve. The relief valve is located at the rear of the casing, like most other oil filters. You can see the anti-drainback valve in the picture. Obviously for applications where the oil filter is mounted inverted, they don't really need an anti-drainback valve since oil will just sit in there anyway. The PL14670 is not one of those filters.

Toyota filters use silicone as well, but I think it's black.
