yes, i checked, a CA smog question....

Does anyone know what the refs look for when giving me the thumbs up for doing a 5s ----> 3vz swap assuming that my 93NA gets a 93 3vz. Is it possible to find a 92 3vz and use a 93MT ECu and fool the refs??

I believe they check the VIN badges on the motor to find out the year of the motor and compare that to the year of the car it is going into.

They don't crawl under the car and look for VINs on the block, and for OBDI cars there's no hooking up a scanner to the ECU, so it doesn't matter if the ECU is from a 92 instead of a 93. Just make sure the evap is hooked up, the EGR is working, and use the stock exh. manifolds and stock air box. And make sure the check engine light is working and not throwing any codes.

It'd be ridiculous on the 1MZ, since it's on the rear bank, under the exhaust manifold.

They just wanna know the year and model it came from, and they reassign your MR2's VIN to the year and model of the engine you're putting in for smog, so it'll be listed as a 1993 Camry V6 instead of a 1993 MR2 in the computer.
