2ZZ are epic, but what about 1ZZ?

I have been thinking, 2ZZ's are great for AW11's and Spyders but what about picking up a cheap 1ZZ and dropping it into the AW11? Would it be a cheap stepping stone to a 2ZZ?

A 1zz wouldn't be bad in a mk1. You can't just slap a 2zz head on a 1zz though.

1zz are cool engines, they can handle boost very well. but its only 140hp out of a 1.8l. sure it has boost potential, but for the amount of money to buy and swap a 1zz why no just get a 20v 4age with 160hp out of a 1.6l. it would be cheaper swap and more hp from the get go. the 2zz has 180hp so it would be worth looking into but it gets expensive. 2zz's are great i have one in my 05 corolla xrs. But i also have a 20v waiting to be swaped into my mr2 good luck hope that helps

I think the 1ZZ would be a great fit for the MKI. They're a dime a dozen and it's a nice technology/weight upgrade over the 4AGE.

I also like the 2ZZ, but to call it "epic" is pretty overstated.

ahh yes, i probably should clarify. when i/if i get a 2ZZ ill be buying the S/C kit for it too, so when i say epic i have 240HP in my head And i think its a wonderful little engine, not to big not to small ect.

This show how little homework i have done, i had no idea the 20V had more HP.

Thanks guys

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but if you stick with the same engine series as in zz series or 3s/5s series, a 2zz could essentially bolt in place where the 1zz was originally customized to fit, and a 3sgte could replace a 5s or 3sge. It would be a good stepping stone for a future swap but if you know you want power do it once and save money spent on an engine you plan to replace. just my

ZZ engines are all-aluminum, which saves about 60 pounds over the iron-block 4A. Plus, the 1ZZ has more torque than the 4A, even the 20v version.

The best idea if you're looking to go FI anyway would be to simply boost the 1zz. You can probably come close to making your goal with that.

That or look into an AZ or S series engine.

Yeh? thanks guys, some good points there. 1ZZ would deffinatly be a good swap for the cost..... im no mechanic by trade so im not sure if i can get a SC12/14 working on a 1ZZ :P This is only a thinking exercise till i find a spyder or celica halfcut for a decent price.

The only problem is that your putting a engine in that has less than 20 more HP. If you want a newer engine that will be reliable then go ahead otherwise it wouldnt be worth the extra work/money. IMO
Go with a 2az with a s-trans? It would be more logical and not cost much plus you would have a real gain in torque.

No it wont bolt in you would have to install eather a s series or a E series trans out of a MK2 so mounts would be in order. I just dont see it being a worth while swap. A 20v will put out more or a SC would the only advantage is running regular gas.

Yeh if i was savy enough with a welder idd be planning a 3SGTE swap, but im not. so the pan is either 20V or 1ZZ. leaning over towards 20V cause its easy.
