All-Import Drag Day

This was not a planned MR2 event, but since we got some cool video footage that others might be interested in, and there were 7 MR2s there (only 5 were racing however), we figured we'd call it an MR2 event. Ken Blake took his '93 Turbo and Trevor Nelson brought his '91 turbo down to the track in Woodburn (between Portland and Salem). Ken's best time of the day was a 14.01, and Trevor had a best of 14.49, which was rather disappointing since Trevor ran a 14.02 at Portland International Raceway a few months ago. This is probably because the synchros for 2nd and 3rd gear aren't in very good shape on Trevor's car at the moment ;-( There was a very nice looking MKI supercharged driven by a guy named Jeff. Jeff had a StageII SC in the car, and was consistantly running mid 15s, which was enough to beat out most of the Hondas there. Another supercharged MR2 was racing too. This one was red and had no spoiler on. It was very quick, and was getting times around 14.7 seconds in the quarter mile. There was a completely stock '93T with different wheels in the back (the stock wheels had crappy tires on them that were cracking) and it ran a best of 14.8, which was very good for a stock MKII Turbo. If you'd like to see the races, check out these pictures, and the video footage:

ken01.mov Ken getting eliminated by a little 3-door Honda Civic... Ouch! Well, it's not as if the Civic was faster than him, it was just closer to his dial-in time. Still, this run was far from his best. Ken was trying to get a 14 flat to beat his previous time of 14.01, and he came up with a 14.5. 1.9 mb
ken02.mov This was Ken's best run for the day. He got a 14.01 against a Civic. The Civic started a little before Ken, but the MR2 ripped by him with no problem in 1st gear, and the the rest of the race wasn't even close. 2.3 mb
ken03.mov Ken was supposed to race a VW Corrado (a nice looking one too) but the guy went to drop the clutch and SNAP! the tranny broke. You can hear a little comment from one of the spectators about oil spilling on the track. 1.5 mb
trev01.mov Trevor in his '91T racing an Integra. Trevor had a bad launch, but still beat the Integra witha run of 14.59 seconds, against the Integra's 15.49 second run. 2.8 mb
trev02.mov Trevor picks up a timeslip of 14.56. Definately not his best time of the day, but it was still enough to pass the VW Golf that had over a second head start, and ended up with a run a little under 16 seconds. 2.0 mb
trev03.mov This time against a red Integra. The driver of the integra went before the green light, and Trevor got a *terrible* launch, but Trevor still passes him before the end of the quarter mile. Listen to the announcer on this run. He says the MR2 has a "Supercharged V6 Engine" .. what?? No it doesn't! This MR2 is basically a stock '91 Turbo with turned up boost and a few other performance mods. 1.9 mb
sc01.mov A very nice looking white Supercharged MR2 against a VW Corrado. You can't see the times at the end, but it looks like the MR2 held the Corrado off all the way to the finish line. The MR2 certainly got off the line a lot quicker. 2.5 mb
sc02.mov A red Supercharged MR2 with no spoiler blows away a white Del Sol with a body kit. Take a look at the launch that the MR2 got compared to the Del Sol. The MR2 got a time of 14.7 seconds or so, very impressive for a supercharged MR2. 2.0 mb
sc03.mov Again, the red Superchared MR2 wins. This time it's against an Integra. The Supercharged MR2 got a time of 14.73 on this run. 1.8 mb
sc04.mov The red Supercharged MR2 racing a Civic that was sponsored by Foreign Auto Trends. The MR2 wins again (what a surprise...) 1.4 mb
race01.mov The red '93 turbo again, going up against a MKIV Supra Twin Turbo. The '93 turbo got an impressive time of 14.8 seconds (very impressive for a car with no mods at all) and the Supra's time was close to that (we're not sure what his time was, but as you can see in the video, it's very close to the MR2). 2.1 mb

Somehow (we're not sure exacly how) a pointless little fight broke out. Here's a picture of everybody crowded around the "action"
