Zupan's Historic Races

Zupan's Historic Races were held at Portland International Raceway, and our club joined with Pacific NW Supra Club in a parking corral to display our cars there. Eight Supras and five MR2s (Jim Swart, Trieste 'Tree' LaPorte, Bob Mealey, Robert Beale, and Dana Jensen) showed up. We had a decently sized corral. We all lined up for a parade lap around the track at noon on both days....pretty exciting! Although there was a pace car and a long line of car clubs which all held us down, we were able to get up some speed both around the corners and on the straight. For most of us it only whetted our appetites! There were over three times as many car clubs participating this year as last, so there ended up being hundreds of cars on display. Porsches (about 75), Ferraris, Rolls Royces, MGs, Austin Healeys, Alfa Romeos, Camaros, Mustangs, Rods, old-old race cars (we're talking turn of the century here folks!), Vipers, etc. Too many to name them all! There was even a '96 Ferrari 355, yellow with black convertible top like the one in The Rock, and a Ferrari 550 Maranello! There was 7 classes of races, the highlight being the 60-70s muscle cars. They were very aggressive and there was quite a lot of nudging and some 360s! The old race cars (all different types) were a real kick to watch. It's hard to believe some of them were over 50 years old and still racing! The camaraderie in our corral was great. Keith Hart, Supra Club leader, lined up Bob Lavrinovich, Parts Manager from Royal Moore Toyota, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) in Hillsboro to meet with us and give out a few small goodies on Sunday. Bob said if you come in and tell him you're part of the club, he'll give you a 20% discount on all TRD parts! His phone number is (503) 693-7412. TRD may sponsor us at the event next year.
